A bit surprised not to see much commentary on this. The Mullins team is out in force again, following their win in the staying hurdle yesterday. On his website he comments that they have been schooling over French style fences so they seem well prepared. I don’t think Willie would send any of the team out unless they had place prospects.
Betting strategy is complicated by the range of betting options: UK bookmakers with 1/5 for 4 each way, PMU, ePMU, Zeturf, SP, UK exchanges.Maybe best to back the Mullins horses for places on the French websites, hoping they might be less popular there. It looked like they offered relatively good value yesterday but as ever with PM you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get.
May 19, 2019 at 15:34 #1439746I always surprises me why more trainers don’t have a crack at the big French races; as Mullins has shown, they are eminently winnable with the right horses + the right preparation, and the prize money is excellent. I remember the amazing Captain Christy just caught on the line in The Grand Steeplechase.
May 19, 2019 at 15:42 #1439748Yes the prize money is fab and it would be a great day out for connections. The course is beautiful. Is that Davy Russell’s first ride in the race? Could imagine Tiger Roll skipping around there….

May 19, 2019 at 17:22 #1439758The winner Carriacou was third in this race two years ago. At that time he was just a 5-year old. After missing the entire 2018 season, he came back nicely this year and won his prep race at Auteuil against Spirit Sun who was still traveling okay today when he fell a few fences from home.
The winner was available at around 16/1 with some bookmakers.May 19, 2019 at 23:59 #1439793Reading the race reports it seems that Davy Russell had been to Autueil once a few years ago, round the hurdles course on Solwhit and again on a spare ride yesterday. Never been round the jumps course. Got a phonecall on Friday as 1st 3 choice jockeys injured/engaged, sat on the horse yesterday, had a look at the fences then went out today and gave it a nice quiet ride to beat the favourite 9 lengths. Fab horse obviously but also…some jockey.
