Fascinating clash at Leopardstown.
Footpad did look like a natural on his debut, fencing extremely well for a first timer over fences, jumping his fences clean and fast.
Despite not being able to find any flaws in Footpad, I’ve come down on the side of Death Duty, only because I just love this horse. Perhaps I’m hoping he outstays Footpad, because they’re no obvious reason why he’s dropping back in trip.
I do think Eliot is maybe of the opinion that Death Duty didn’t stay the 3 miles last year in the potato race, so maybe he wants to have the arkle as an option in case he’s steering the horse away from the RSA
December 24, 2017 at 15:34 #1333840Its the easier of the novice chases
Not to mention prize money is key,
I think 2m is too short for death duty, although i wont be backing footpad at the price currently, i do think he will win,
If footpad drifted id back him, i can see a finians oscar style run from death duty, although its not as short as 2m i think he will get stung for speed
December 24, 2017 at 18:23 #1333858Best race on Boxing Day for me. I cannot see Footpad getting beat no matter what the distance but we will see. Can’t wait for it. Hope they both get round.
December 24, 2017 at 18:45 #1333860This is a joke, surely ?
But, hey, if the bookies want to give me 5/6 Footpad for my Boxing Day multiples, I’m not going to complain.
December 24, 2017 at 19:01 #1333862Im assuming they thought the monalee race was too hot, hes surely better at 3m than 2m
December 24, 2017 at 19:42 #1333869I wouldn’t back Monalee in that race. ( best fresh, hasn’t always progressed after a run )
DD is a 2 1/2 miler in my book. Might win the odd 3 miler under the right circumstances but 2 miles against Footpad ?
Theyre bascically hoping that Footpad doesn’t complete
December 24, 2017 at 20:03 #1333873We’ll see. you must be very confident about it’s chances of winning the arkle if it’s that much of a certainty. Struggle to see what Death Duty has done wrong over fences and he does have slightly more experience?
Hubris coming before a fall and all that….
December 24, 2017 at 21:04 #1333882I like Footpad and DD a lot but the value is probably Avenir D’Une Vie at 25/1 and I’l have a wee bet on him. He promised a lot for Mullins as a bumper horse (beaten 7 lengths in last year’s festival bumper) and his win last time might be an indication he’s getting the hang of the game now. He’s too big and worth chancing imo.
December 24, 2017 at 21:41 #1333890I still believe that its possible death duty will be a non runner and perhaps run in the 3miler later in the week. Has no hope against footpad
December 24, 2017 at 21:57 #1333891Regardless of this races outcome I reckon Any Second Now will be a horse to keep on side. Could be one for one of the festival handicaps, maybe even the 4 miler.

I can’t see it. surely if it’s declared at this stage it’s going to run, perhaps if Eliot had a horse just as good in the race then it might be diverted elsewhere, but he hasn’t.
I think people are underestimating death duty. he’s looked superb for me so far this season and I think he’s the one they all have to beat, not footpad.
December 24, 2017 at 22:54 #133390114:20 – Death Duty
Death Duty brought home his second Grade 1 from Fairyhouse earlier this month, he was impressive on the day however did jump left so going left-handed today will suit as I hope will the drop back in trip, he has plenty of speed so with a clear round of jumping I’m expecting a big run. Footpad is his main opposition today but I think the world of this horse and I have every confidence in him to add another Grade 1 to his collection.
from gordon eliot on betfair.
December 24, 2017 at 23:02 #1333902Hes definitely not running in the 3miler wex he wasnt declared,
Like i said i can see a finians type of run from DD and getting stung for toe early on, this is surely too short, hes not done much wrong judge, but he does not strike me as an arkle type, the same way finians didnt
December 24, 2017 at 23:07 #1333904You might well be right Ham but can’t bring myself to desert the horse. Not ever been impressed with Finian’s like I am with this one and Gordon Eliot makes very few mistakes.
December 25, 2017 at 00:04 #1333909I think this decision, to run Death Duty, is all down to the Trainers Championship. I know it’s early but there are 7 Grade 1’s up for grabs and Mullins is competitive in all of them. Elliot likely to take at least 2 with Megli Khan and Apples Jade but Mullins will have a few good runners in both of them races.
Mullins will be fancied to take at least 2 also with Faugheen and Min and I reckon Elliot is sending Death Duty to try and stop Footpad. That Grade 2 in Limerick over 2 and a half would have been a stroll for Death Duty.
Mullins will also have chances to collect some money with Yorkhill although Sizing John will be fav there.
Will be an interesting week
December 25, 2017 at 01:25 #1333915Footpad looked a good bit faster than Death Duty but he beat absolute statues last time. Nine runs since and nine runs mince, with all 9 efforts unplaced.
I can’t bet either at the odds, just one to watch for me. Long term it might be Death Duty who makes up into the better chaser but this looks sharp for him here.
Good luck wherever the cash goes.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 25, 2017 at 13:30 #1333933Yeah, Footpad isn’t Altior but, in the context of this race, he should have too much pace for Desth Duty.
