Obviously there is more prize money in flat racing, but does anyone have any idea about the comparative earnings of flat and jump jockeys?
Do the average flat jockeys earn much more than their jump counterparts, or is it evenly matched?
I’ve read that, apart from the very top ones, most jump jockeys struggle to make a living.
May 5, 2008 at 17:04 #161763It shouldn’t be too difficult to work out. For the 2007 season Flat Jockeys got £96.36 per race and Jumpers got £135.52. Multiply this by the amount of rides and add on 5% of the prize money and that will give you an indication of their earnings. I believe they only get paid a percentage of winning prize money and not placed though I could be wrong.

Seven – the jocks do get a percentage of the place money but the percentage diminishes with the place.
For example the jockey percentage for a jnon-pattern ump race paying six places is split as follows Winner 5.89%, second 0.85%, third 0.42%, fourth 0.21%, fifth 0.11% and sixth 0.05% – those percentages are of the total prize fund.(2007 figures)
May 5, 2008 at 22:00 #161835Riding fees are only one part of the equation though, as the top jocks in both codes can command serious retainers- AP McCoy is reputedly on a million a year from JP, God knows what Godolphin pay Frankie, etc. Along with other incentives like shares in stallions, the Flat boys at the top are ahead of most jump jocks.
