Looking through Mephisto’s form he seems to generally need a run after a break. The rain would be a big negative for Blythe Knight who barely gets 2m over hurdles- I’ll bare my ass in the Prom if he wins a Champion Hurdle. I’ll be tempted to throw away a nifty each-way on The Furze if the dead 8 stay in- if it gets soft I bet Blythe Knight comes out though.
November 30, 2007 at 23:09 #128053The vibes coming from Alan King are certainly not over confident. Katchit surprised him last year with the rate of improvement he made during the season. I have a funny feeling a few ante post vouchers for the champion will be torn up tommorow.
November 30, 2007 at 23:48 #128055I don’t have any choice here as we backed Blythe Knight EW at the best odds a week ago.
Despite anything you might read between now and then I can promise you he is 100% and ready to run for his life. Just hope it’s not pissing down in the UK.Terrified of Katchit but very confident making a profit. First time against older horses but you don’t win the races he has won without being a bit special. The hope is BK can do him for toe so don’t expect to see him till between the last 2……..lets hope you don’t need binochulars

Harchibald could win this on his best form but that is a big if.
For an interest I’m having a little fun bet today which I haven’t done for a long time.
Katchit and Blythe Knight X Charachter Builder and Denman 4 win doubles….small profit if the 2 jollys win and big profit if John gets the double…….They fancy CB a little bit, but not confident he’s up to this class, despite what the sporting life say about good vibes coming out the yard………Think he must have been talking to the house maid.

If one accepts Noel Meade’s view of Harchibald’s form last season*, then he has to have an excellent chance in this race.
I’ve never completely subscribed to the ‘dog’ theory about this horse. Paul Carberry implied after his Emo Oil defeat that he had gone to the front too soon, and exactly the same would have happened had he done so in that infamous Champion Hurdle. The horse has, after all, won 8 hurdle races, the only one by more than 2l being when he was left clear at the last, and if he did have a propensity to throw in the towel it would surely have manifested in his Dundalk re-introduction.
One thing is certain, there won’t be any dual Champion Hurdle winners in his way, and he could well win this without breaking sweat. From RP stable tours:
*Last season was a frustrating one with him, as he was never really 100 per cent right. To be fair to him, he had been in training for two years without a real break. When he picked up that birch injury at Leopardstown in December 2005, the vets advised that we keep him in instead of letting him off for a proper break. By the time he was fit last season, he was probably a bit fed up with things. He´s come back from his summer break in good form, seems happy in himself and we´re quite happy with him.December 1, 2007 at 02:24 #128073I have to agree with you I was shocked when he was beaten like that in the Champion as I had watched him run in Ireland and he looked all over a champion hurdle winner and thoroughly genuine. On the morning of the race he was a huge price, much bigger than I anticipated anyway, so perhaps he is a bit of an old rogue, I really don’t know
He wouldn’t be the price he istoday if we had a crystal ball he be 6/4 fav or 1000/1
but even his trainer and Jockey can’t be sure till he runs here despite him running well on the flat. He’s a risky bet but if he turns up guns blazing he could eat this lot alive.
Wouldn’t for a minute advice anyone not to bet him just think it’s a big if.
December 1, 2007 at 10:09 #128098I can’t believe no-one has mentioned Al Eile, who arguably has the best form on offer in the race. He represents the clear value bet in the race for me.
December 1, 2007 at 11:30 #128107I wasn’t sure Al Eile would have the pace at 2m on anything other than soft/heavy going TDK.
December 1, 2007 at 11:58 #128112GS would be ideal for him and as long as they go a reasonable gallop, then I thought this trip at a track like Newcastle should be fine for him

Would agree with DJ on Al Eile.
The only time he has won at 2m since his novice days was on very heavy ground at Haydock, and even the Cesarewitch wasn’t far enough for him this year.December 1, 2007 at 12:32 #128117Added to that, his win at Aintree doesn’t look the strongest either considering Detroit City and Asian Maze both ran below their best and Gaspara’s performances this season have hardly boosted the form. I think Clopf is the E.W value especially with the ground softening against Blythe Knight.
December 1, 2007 at 12:35 #128119His Champion Hurdle 4th is better than anything Katchit has done imo
December 1, 2007 at 12:40 #128122Well it will be seeing as though Katchit has yet to run in a race of this calibre.
December 1, 2007 at 12:42 #128123Yes – Katchit could improve past his opponents here, but that is already overfactored into his price of around 6-4 imo….
December 1, 2007 at 15:47 #128180
I’m not too despondent about Katchit, perhaps on better ground and Cheltenham he might reverse form
….please??
December 1, 2007 at 15:56 #128183No excuses for katchit there imo – just not quite good enough.
December 1, 2007 at 15:59 #128184That was a good run from Katchit wasn’t it?
December 1, 2007 at 16:00 #128185Race went pretty much with the formbook and katchit still has a bit to find with the likes of Harchibald and Al Eile.
