Last year was a quieter year for me with the Sandy Thomson yard, but I did bet Benson for this before its move to Sandown.
He’s in poor enough form, but I see enough in there who won’t be going, so for a bit of interest I’ll do the same as a year ago, and it seemed just as daft a bet then
They have though given him an entry again, and he usually runs a big race at least once a season, so third here is what I’m looking at
Highly unlikely I know, but can’t resist, and if he’s in the entries for The Rehearsal, I’ll double him up with Mr Incredible
Benson 100’s EW3Pls
Edit, topped up after Final Decs to 300’s EW
November 25, 2024 at 15:08 #1714036A similarly throw away bet as Vtc on Nemean Lion. 16’s.
Should have looked at the market before CH was withdrawn and would have probably got treble figures.
He’s a horse I really like and if he can brush up his jumping he won’t make a fool of himself in grade one company. I’ve even had a nibble at 200’s for the champion hurdle in march.
Ran a cracking race in the Greatwood last year which always churns out winners. Then demolished the field in the kingwell before a respectable run in the champion hurdle.
If he’s come forward from last year he’s going to pay his way for me this year.
November 25, 2024 at 15:17 #1714038Benson? Are you going to hedge that bet?
I’ll get me coat.
November 25, 2024 at 15:42 #1714041Take No Chances each way 40s
November 25, 2024 at 15:48 #1714042The form of the Welsh Champion Hurdle was boosted by Steel Ally Saturday so will have a go with Lump Sum.
The more I know the less I understand.
November 28, 2024 at 11:00 #1714229Lump Sum is the one I like in this, and although he’s an ew selection, I think he can go really close at a bigger price
November 28, 2024 at 16:02 #1714253Tellherthename is interesting me a little bit. It wouldn’t take much at 66/1 to be fair. The grounds good at the moment and I think if that Supreme had been run on good-soft at worst Tellherthename would have given a much better account of himself than he did on the testing ground which he disappointed on at Aintree in the Formby also. He still might have finished a long way behind Mystical Power on better ground but we just don’t know. I am a bit concerned about the yard change, still same owner but perhaps he’ll get plotted up for a big handicap somewhere. I want to be against Sir Gino regardless as its so hard for juveniles coming out into the open company.
November 29, 2024 at 16:00 #1714322poor field, wont stop sir gino finishing 4th or 5th, given the record of 4yos in open company, a max lay and place lay has to be done, he could win, but i like patterns, happy to be proven wrong but you wont lose often laying juveniles into open company..
November 30, 2024 at 06:33 #1714366It’ll be interesting to see how Sir Gino hurdles , if he’s been schooling over fences then he may get caught out , I’ll be on the Mullins horse
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
November 30, 2024 at 11:03 #1714392I’ve tickled Benson to , heart over head but in no way should be that price , hope he runs a nice race , prep for I also surely , at least we know he’s fit
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
November 30, 2024 at 11:03 #1714393Mystical Power, purely of the bad record of 4 year olds.
Mystical Power 5/4
November 30, 2024 at 11:06 #1714397I’ve taken 11-1 on Lump Sum. I think that’s a really fair price, and I can see him going well
November 30, 2024 at 11:57 #1714414Mystical Power for me too, in a double with Lossie tomorrow. I think he’s a bit underrated as he lost the Supreme. If he’d won there then lost either of Aintree or Punchestown he would have been judged less harshly, but the Supreme was a bog and he was keen so I’m forgiving him. He’s more savvy and a good hurdler now. Small concern about fitness, especially as he’s not a good work horse apparently, but at least he should be a week further on than State Man was last week if they were all working on the same schedule. Had schooled over fences but think they made the hurdling decision early enough to have a couple of sessions over hurdles.
Sir Gino has been messed about a bit; he’s got a big engine but didn’t hurdle well last year and I would be worried about schooling over fences then giving him a last minute pop over a few hurdles and expecting him to come out and jump like an open G1 hurdler. Beat Kargese easily but she’d given herself a tough race at Cheltenham, and juvenile form is nearly always overrated.November 30, 2024 at 14:16 #1714435Impressive that. And
WD to those on Lump Sum each way
November 30, 2024 at 14:20 #1714436MP ran abysmally so hard to assess what to make of the form – would have liked to have seen him go clear without Nico using the whip several times to beat Lump Sum (who was 14L behind MP last season at Aintree).
What I would say is that we might see a even better horse if he can run off a real strong gallop (or failing that learn to settle better early on) – tactical small field G1 races tend not to be truly well run and him pulling like he did early on won’t helphim against much better G1 opposition.
Nice problem to have though.
November 30, 2024 at 14:21 #1714437Mystical Power was so bad it made Sir Gino look good ;o)
November 30, 2024 at 14:21 #1714438Sir Gino hurdled better than I thought he would. MP keen early on but then just cut out really. Made for a rubbish grade 1 that needs demoted along with a lot of other early season G1s.
