Very amusing, Maxilon and oh so true.
The Tipton Taliban is a phrase still used in those parts, most often flung at Albion fans by the Tatty Orange lot.
February 1, 2009 at 05:20 #207466Top post Max.
Slow motion racing, hock deep mud, tired horses being flogged. Ugly stuff indeed. For those not in captivity best to forget all about racing between November and the end of March, and find something better to do.
February 1, 2009 at 16:18 #207508Well played, Max.
My interest in this sport is the nearest thing to dormant. Save me!
Happy New Year to all.
February 17, 2009 at 16:39 #210702The ‘boys in Blue have hit the ‘Red Zone’………win x win x doubles.
February 17, 2009 at 22:15 #210747I had a couple of bets on these races at Al Shadaba doo, or whatever it’s called. The horses who were doing well in their first races at the festival, were flopping in their second race. I can’t be doing with all the complications, so i’ll give it a body swerve until the DGC.
February 17, 2009 at 22:32 #210749Was being dominated by Mike De Kock and more so "Frankies Choice" Godolphin runners last week, personally if you back the shorter prices you cant really get much more predictable than that.
Persoanlly I done an e/w lucky 63 and only hit one 50/1 3rd in the sprint before the UAE guineas but had three that challenged strongly before fissling out down the run in (which were almost all trained by Al Reine if I remember). You can get up a few bigger prices at Nad Al sheba at times though, but anything which is even reasonably well heard of in the UK will be priced up as such.
It is also worth remembering that when that bloke in William Hills at Thirsk got his million pound payout 8 timer up about this time last year, quite a few of his selections were at Nad Al Sheba, so it clearly works for some people.
February 18, 2009 at 00:32 #210779Beware of potential big-payout accas involving UAE (and other foreign) racing – some bookies have smaller max payouts for foreign racing
William Hill actually halved that guy’s winnings IIRC and they stated that they could have restricted it to about £50K, if they wanted.
February 18, 2009 at 00:36 #210780There is STUNNING value to be had at Nad Al Sheeba on BF, STUNNING.

By recollection, the guys 50p eight timer accumulator was due to pay close to 2.2 million, but William Hill’s max payout was a million. Thats a pretty good max payout IMO though. When that bloke backed frankies magnificent 7, william hills max payout was only 500,000 but they paid the extra 50,000 as a publicity exercise. The extra 1.2 million that the bloke in yorkshire would have been a little excessive to pay for publicity.
Think Coral’s max payout is only 100,000 (or was last time I looked) which is pretty poor for an operation of that scale. I remember a fella in my home town hitting 70,000 in my home town and only getting paid 20,000 which pretty poor.
Will have to look into it further into the bookies foreign policy. I’d always thought max payout was max payout regardless.
February 18, 2009 at 03:07 #210823There’s 2 articles on RP cuttings just after the guy’s win (Freddie Cragg is his name – search using "Cragg") and they both make reference to the fact that Hills were only obliged to pay him £100K because there were foreign races included in the acca
I’ve just checked Hill’s terms and conditions and they state
Where selections taken from the different categories listed below are combined in multiple or accumulative bets the lowest maximum winnings limit will apply.
Event Maximum Winnings
Horse Racing in Great Britain & Ireland £1 Million
Horse Racing in South Africa £250,000
Horse Racing in all other countries £100,000The positive publicity obviously outweighs the negative publicity from insisting on the max payout in the case of Freddie Cragg but it’s still in the rules so beware
I must admit that prior to this case, I would have assumed that max payout = max payout, irrespective of where the racing takes place but it is obviously not the case
Another sneaky one (for want of a better phrase) is FPP. In Dylan Thomas’s Arc victory, a lot of people thought that their winnings were safe once the horse passed the finish line first because some bookies pay First Past The Post but actually this only applies to racing in GB & IRE and not France.

It has been the case for donkeys years David.
There also used to be a rule with many bookmakers in that there was a lower limit if your bets included races from evening fixtures (even UK ones) – presumably from the days when they did not open in the evenings and were therefore unable to lay the bets off?
