— Posted by Jay Torbitt on 6:35 pm on Mar. 20, 2001
Firstly, thanks to agreeing to answer our questions Ferdy!
Looking back, which of the horses you have trained is your all time favourite?
Analogues Daughter
And what one horse would you like to have in your yard?
Another Moose
— Posted by ALI on 8:03 pm on Mar. 20, 2001
Ferdy, when a stable loses one of its stars it must be hard trying to keep moral high. The loss of French Holly must have been felt most by yourself, his owners and his jockey Andrew Thornton. He made a very impressive debute to fences and could have been anything. How hard does it hit a yard when faced with the loss of such a talented horse.
You cannot dwell on it, life must go on and you try and look for a new star
— Posted by Zoz on 8:34 pm on Mar. 20, 2001
Hi, and thanks for agreeing to answering all our questions – pretty daunting I should imagine. Also, congratulations with Narrow Water this season.
I hope you don’t mind but I have two questions and can’t decide which one to ask: the first would be, as a trainer, which race would you value, on a personal and not financial level, to win the most? Secondly, do you agree, wholeheartedly or in any small part, with the theories on the Cheltenham Festival adding to the risk of injury in horses who run there?
1. The Grand National
2. No its at the end of season, lots of small problems can become a big one.
— Posted by SIR TRISTRAM on 9:38 pm on Mar. 20, 2001
Hello ferdy thanx for your time mate,
Q. Could you give us 5 horses youve bought this year with a view to the future that maybe wont be seen out till next year?
Mijico, Westfield John, Gortmore Mews, Wemyss Quest, Truckers Tavern
Q. Which other trainer do you most admire and for what reasons i.e.able to bring back troublesome horses/gets the best out of limited resources etc.
Robert Alner
Q. What are your ambitions for big races or achievements in the next 5 years i.e.win a gold cup/have a 100 winners in a season etc.
The Gold Cup
— Posted by simmo on 1:33 am on Mar. 21, 2001
Thanks Ferdy ‘
Do you believe that Paris pike will come back as good as ever and do you think he could win a gold cup or national.
Paris Pike will come back as good as ever and he could win a gold cup or national on good ground.
— Posted by Gearoid VI on 12:03 am on Mar. 22, 2001
You have come in for critiscism over your apparent "hyoing" of your horsrs such as Ballinclay King but has the horse dissappointed you or does have what it takes to run a big race in the Arkle had it been or if it is run?
I do not know what hyoing means and I have not seen any critism. We try to tell the truth it would be a lot easier to tell lies.
— Posted by SIR TRISTRAM on 2:40 am on Mar. 22, 2001
Hi Ferdy , whats your favourite course to run at and why?
Ascot – it suits our horses.
— Posted by jez on 6:16 pm on Mar. 22, 2001
Hello Ferdy a couple of questions please if you dont mind. ichi Beau looked really good when bowling along in front in his first couple of races at the start of the season, a bit unlucky since. Do you feel he will be even better next season and possibly go up in grade. I remember Ballinclay King beating Shotgun Willy In his first race. Do you intend Ballinclay ever running over three miles plus or wont he stay.
No 1. Yes
No 2. Will go up in trip next season. The reason he has stayed at 2 miles is heavy ground.
— Posted by Katy on 10:39 pm on Mar. 22, 2001
Hi Ferdy,
How has the Foot and Mouth outbreak affected your training operation?
We have no runners but training schedule is not affected.
— Posted by budclub on 7:38 pm on Mar. 23, 2001
Hello Ferdy – I see you’ve taken Streamstown out of the Grand National, He looks a natural for the scottish national though doesn’t he? Is that the target now?
Thanx for taking the time.
Streamstown will be put in the Henessey next season.
— Posted by Sal on 1:03 pm on Mar. 24, 2001
Hi Ferdy
What do you look for when buying a horse?
Thank you!
Size to make a chaser with a pedigree
— Posted by dario on 12:26 am on Mar. 26, 2001
hi ferdy..
i’ve heard various weather people saying that this was the wettest year officially since records began some 200 years ago and that they suspect there might well be a succession of dry summers and very wet winters
now we all know what a devastating effect the rain had on racing this year and i was wondering if you were at all worried about the future pattern of NH racing over the coming years if the same amount of meetings have to be cancelled and do you think there’s anything that can be done by the courses to provide better going??
thanks for your time and all the best,
dario
The experts were telling us 3 years ago that global warming was going to turn us into fried up prunes. I think we will survive.
— Posted by Nev on 12:30 pm on Mar. 27, 2001
Hiya Ferdy, thanks for your time.
Q… When looking through the program book, whats the single most important factor you take into account when deciding to enter a horse or not.
Would not enter if horse was not right in himself.
Q… Knowing your connection with Mr Hubbard, how did you feel watching Strong Promise run a blinder in the Gold Cup.
Very proud that we set up a good training centre.
