I am, i have to admit, slightly disappointed that only one of them doesn’t have a racing/broadcasting background. It would be nice to have properly taken a chance on some people, no one’s saying they’ll end up commentating the Cheltenham Festival or next years Derby!
June 9, 2011 at 11:38 #359735If anybody is at Newbury this afternoon – Sophia Upton, one of the contenders, will be calling the charity race at 5:50.
An update on that one – we will have three of them calling the last.
Emily Jones calling the start, Katie Stevens the middle section and Sophia the finish.
I don’t normally stay for Charity races but think I will make an exception today.
June 9, 2011 at 19:51 #359812This is no reflection on those taking part – all credit to them and they are all doing doing their best.
However I think asking the ladies to call a race in public this weekend is asking far too much of them, far too soon.
Racetech commentators have a years training before they are allowed near a "live" microphone – these ladies are being asked to do a public commentary after only a few days training.
Even an experienced broadcaster like Emily Jones was struggling this afternoon – she was fine with the runners going down but when she commentated the nerves kicked in – I really felt for her, for all three of them. All had embarrassingly long pauses as they attempted to identify runners and that was only in an eight runner contest.
Through no fault of their own they are being placed in a potentially embarrassing position.
I really think the semi-finals should not be broadcast but done on an internal loop and then give the two finalists some intense training before the public final in July.

June 9, 2011 at 23:52 #3598477 of the 8 already work in racing? What were Rodders + Co proving again?
Oh yeah, how to have a good stitch up at the last minute when you’re desperate.
June 10, 2011 at 12:12 #359929I have sent an open letter to Rod Street about the Filly Factor semi-finals this weekend.

June 10, 2011 at 12:40 #359932Paul,
You’re worrying too much about the issue, sounds quite entertaining to me, wished I’d heard the three yesterday. In any event plenty of male commentators have put up embarrassing performances in the past, we only have to go back last Sunday for one. No one will die.
June 10, 2011 at 19:02 #359980For the sake of balance.
Rod Street has responded to my letter and here is a link to it.

Needless to say I do not accept his arguments.
If the future of racing is following the Britain’s Got Talent route then I will want nothing more to do with it.
June 10, 2011 at 19:54 #359984Come on Big O, lighten up….
Although we can all recognise and appreciate your valid concerns with the current format for the Semi’s and that those concerns stem from having the best interests of the commentators at heart I think Rod Street is right on this one.
The British public do have a sense of fun on occasions such as these and tend to enjoy events like this for the novelty that they are.
Good luck to all eight semi finalist, they are all certainly braver and far more talented I would be…..
….and may the best man win.

I sincerely hope the best one wins – I have a few bob on the outcome
June 10, 2011 at 20:52 #359994That’s more like it Paul!
June 10, 2011 at 20:57 #359996One final question on it.
Is it just coincidence the only semi-finalist with no broadcasting or industry experience has been given the 20 runner six-furlong sprint at Donny?
June 11, 2011 at 18:13 #360165Crikey, even the very best have trouble with that sort of task Paul – more suitable races than that surely.
June 11, 2011 at 20:11 #360182The entire Doncaster card is tricky tomorrow – it is going to be tough on all four of them.
June 12, 2011 at 08:24 #360226Yesterdays were a mixed bunch, each one better than the previous ones, but all four did well in the circumstances.
Did feel sorry for both Aly and Sonia as both seemed to struggle with the colours.
Laura did well also, but Rachel who was last was very good, considering it was her first live call, and really has potential.
I’m just about to set off to Donny for the second semi-final – I really feel for the girls this afternoon. Doncaster is a very hard course to call at and they all have big field races to call home.
Fingers crossed for them all.
Yesterday’s efforts are available for viewing on RPTV
June 12, 2011 at 08:55 #360231Disappointed they weren’t on ATR and let viewers vote, who were the judges? Listening to those snippets they all did well but thought Rachel Casey was outstanding.
June 12, 2011 at 12:42 #360265You can form your own view as to why there is no vote in the semi-finals. I was told it was considered but they were concerned
the vote could be "skewed" by getting family and friends to vote.Judging panel is different both days – supposed to be a trainer, jockey and, I believe, broadcaster – not sure who though. I presume no Moore’s on the judging panel today!!!
Apparently there is suppose to be a text vote for the final at Ascot on 24th July – so not sure what the difference is, although again the current plan is for the commentary to be broadcast on the PA.
