Not a bad show this year I thought .. how they all think the Norway song was good is beyond me, but there you go.
I was only half listening as I had it on in the background whilst working and I have to say the Norway song was the only decent song in the competition – it was certainly the only one that made me stop working and actually pay full attention.
There were one or two half decent songs but the majority, including ours, were instantly forgettable.
I see Graham Norton has taken over Wogan’s slot ..
and was sufficiently irreverant at times, although he seemed to take a while to settle into the swing of things and he was too restrained for my liking – he could have been a great deal more cutting in his comments. It was almost as if he had been told to play it safe.
The highlight of the show was the phone lines being opened from the space station ..
.. wtf!!I suppose one advantage of having Russia host the show – it was a different touch. As was the surreal "entertainment" during the voting.
Can’t see Oslo matching that next year!!!
May 17, 2009 at 17:58 #228244I quite liked the winning entry, and we did better than we typically do (as it’s not easy to beat last place
). Not as dire as it usually is!May 17, 2009 at 19:45 #228275…….but will any of them be remembered in 30 years, like the 4th from 1979 ?
Spine-tinglingly bad as that is, I fully expect Jeremy to swiftly usurp it in terms of gash naffness once he’s off the air this afternoon (though IMO he’ll have to go some to topple Lithuania’s effort from 2006(?), "We Are The Winners").
By the way, did the violin piece in last nights’ winning song remind anyone else of "Devil Went Down To Georgia"?

if he does, i’d fully expect him to have Darren to answer to.

that song has a venerable history since Eurovision:

May 17, 2009 at 23:20 #228356I thought Grahan Norton was excellent [he was at his best in the voting section]…I was glued to the telly for 3 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. The songs were varied and of a high standard
; Estonia, in particular were top class, as were Iceland….Bosnia were straight out of the West End; our song actually grew on me, but not enough to have made me want to vote for it even if I could. there was a fair bit of plagiarism floating around [the Turkish song sounded like a song that was a big hit for some girl out of Neighbours, whose name escapes me, but I loved it anyway so I don’t care!]. I understand that Andrew Lloyd Webber has been instrumental in, not only improving the quality of our song but the competition in general, and has done a damn fine job. Perhaps he aught to get involved in the attempt to get more people going racing! Annoyingly I didn’t have an ew bet on Iceland which was my plan, but, as a betting medium it’s worth looking into next year because, in general, the best songs got the votes [however, the window of opportunity may have been lost because next year people will know that; this year it was still a bit of an unknown quantity].I’m even, and I don’t believe I’m saying this, planning to buy a cd of all the songs if one is released!

…….but will any of them be remembered in 30 years, like the 4th from 1979 ?
If Sonny J mashed it up with Boney M’s ‘Night Flight to Venus’, I’d wager it would sell at least 20m copies in Europe.

You’re too generous, Friggo – I was contriving enough gash naffness myself yesterday afternoon.

Dschingis Khan have their fans even now – AngloGerman loves them, IIRC, and one of my pub quiz team can’t go more than about three weeks without shoehorning them into some conversation or other.

That’ll be this, then. Watch out for Dr John Reid having an eppy at around 1:38.

Was I the only one who thought Norway were, in the politest possible sense, ******* woeful?
I have to say that I was left traumatised by the trousers of the German front-man, but the Romanian entry certainly made amends.
All in all a bearable show (for once).
May 19, 2009 at 15:04 #228676The British entry by Sir ALW sounded as if it was a composite of other songs from musicals. A bit cliched imo.
In truth, it was dire, much in keeping with this dreary and awful "competition."

This is my view for each song, three at a time:
1) ALBANIA – Feel the passion, Aurela Gace
Flat. Didn’t like it.
2) ARMENIA – Boom Boom, Emmy
Little rock number. Nice girl.
3) AUSTRIA – The secret is love, Nadine Beiler
Immitation of Mississipi ballad. Not so great.

The type of song that attracts attention in Eurovision. Watch list.5) BELARUS – I love Belarus, Anastasia Vinnikova
Rythmic, nice. Beautiful girl and country costumes.
6) BELGIUM – With Love Baby, Witloof Bay

Flat tune. Not very attractive.8] BULGARIA – Na Inat, Poli Genova
Commonplace. Two great entries from Bulgaria in 2008, 2009, both very unjustly treated. This one cannot go places.
9) CROATIA – Celebrate, Daria
Ok this one. Sexy singer, cannot reach high notes.

Greek melody, traditional Byzantium type musical structure. No good though. It means "I loved you like an angel".11) DENMARK – New tomorrow, A friend in London
Little impression.
12) ESTONIA – Rockefeller street, Geter Jaani
Nice little song. Socialists won’t like it because it says about Rockefeller. Nice girl.

Interesting song, rock style. Nice use of accordeon in the middle of the song. Liked.14) FINLAND – Da Da Dam, Paradise Oskar
Last years country tune from Finland was fantastic. They shot and buried it without trial. This too is not a bad ballad, by Eurovision standards.
15) FRANCE – Sognu, Amaury Vassili
In Corsikan language. Lullaby, might be liked.

A 50s style melody. Could earn some points.

A funny song about lipstick.
