Of course, the fact that both countries are the most recent to apply for membership of NATO is a pure coincidence…
May 14, 2023 at 04:47 #1647783I noted what I thought was a bit odd in the public voting for
Australia. I haven’t been bothered to go through the other
countries (yet), but this is unusual to say the least. I
probably wouldn’t have noticed other than I had a tenner
E/W at 200/1 4 places, and before the public vote I think
the Ozzies were about 6th.https://eurovisionworld.com/eurovision/2023#australia
Out of the 26 jury panels only 3 gave no points to Australia, 7 of the
panels gave between 8 and 12. Fair enough, they were never going to win.
What catches my eye, or my sniffy nose, is that 20 out of the 26 of the
public vote gave 0 points to Australia. Now either the individual jury
panels were so out of touch with their respective punters in their country,
or is it possible something smells a bit. I wouldn’t want to start a conspiracy
theory……but

May 14, 2023 at 12:15 #1647812There were quite a few Lost Hearts nails last night. I think they must have chosen the winner from who had the longest. Gave me the creeps given that I’ve never got over that tv drama! Think it was all pretty substandard music wise. I know there have been some years when I’ve wanted to listen to lots of the songs over and over again and I even ‘got’ the chicken song after the event albeit suffering from ‘what the **** is that all about’ on the night. Apart from Norway, Australia and Serbia, all of which I did like, I don’t want to hear any of them again. Our song didn’t deserve to do so badly. And the Ukraine song was awful ( there, I’ve said it and I’ll go to hell now!)
May 14, 2023 at 13:43 #1647818BigG, the only reason I punted the Aussies for top 10 was because I had faith the Jury would see it for what it was, a bloody good song. I knew the Drongos and Flamin Galah’s of the continent would simply dismiss it because they don’t agree with them being in the contest. So, it was a risk but it paid off.
The UK side of things I’m unsure of. There is a view that we are hugely disliked and therefore don’t get televotes but I don’t entirely believe that. Along with this years song, I think our entries in recent years have ventured from bland to outright terrible.
That is apart from last year where we actually had a good song and received 183 televotes along with the 200+ jury votes (And would have received more if it wasn’t for the solidarity votes for the Ukrainians).Anyway, for the most part, I have faith in the Jury system and the competition is better for it.
May 14, 2023 at 15:40 #1647834The voting is interesting isn’t it. As with another song I loved a few years ago ( KEiiNO’s Spirit in the Sky) the Norway song did very badly with the judges vote but was incredibly popular with the public vote.
May 14, 2023 at 17:10 #1647866Moehat, your three favourites were the same as mine! Would also have Belgium on my list though.
Although there is clearly some politicisation in the voting, I think all the talk today of the jury votes being fixed so that Sweden could host next year is ill-founded.
The winning song was popular in the lead-up to the event, and got a big public vote too. The Finnish entry was clearly never going to appeal to the more serious-minded juries.
May 14, 2023 at 17:36 #1647869One of my favourite songs from years ago was the UK entry sung by Engelbert Humperdinck. I don’t, in general, like slow ballads so, when I do take to one I tend to think it’s rather special. It did, of course, absolutely nothing. I’ll check out Belgium again.
May 14, 2023 at 22:29 #1647887An insult to the excellent Lost Hearts Xmas Eve BBC horror. Reckon Nathan has nailed it with the ABBA anniversary theory. Inexplicable otherwise. Not even in the top 10 for me. Picked Estonia myself with Finland close second, latter backed up by the public vote. How Italy did so well is a mystery. Likewise Australia’s poor show. UK entry deserved to do badly. It was awful and the performance on the night made it sound even worse.
May 15, 2023 at 00:11 #1647899Of the two front runners, I wanted Finland to win, but still think the Swedish song is a deserving victor. I don’t buy that there’s been any conspiracy, though would not rule out jurors being influenced by external factors in this or any other year.
There are only five jurors per country. It does seem wrong that so few people have the same influence as many thousands of paying televoters.
As for the UK entry, “awful” seems a harsh assessment to me!
It’s performed fairly well on streaming and is reasonably catchy, but did not stand out on the night unfortunately. - AuthorPosts
