hi everyone, on a day out to the derby next saturday and wonder if anyone had any tips on best station to go to, whats the town like on the Saturday night, any good pubs for good atmosphere in the town after racing? Also the pubs beside the course will they be heaving, are they good after the racing?
Cheers

The trains stop at East Croydon and Purley amongst others on the way, so you can get on at those stations if it’s more convenient. The other station in the centre of Epsom town is on a different line, about 20 minutes walk.
There are one or two pubs near the course, the Amato being one, but the train service back up to Purley, E Croydon and London is pretty easy and you might prefer an evening out there rather than in Epsom. I think the train still stops at South Croydon, there are a several decent eateries there, and the area’s perhaps a little nicer than the centre of Croydon on a Saturday evening.
May 29, 2016 at 20:25 #1248656Tattenham Corner is easiest/closest station but Epsom station has plenty buses on hand just outside the exit to take you from the station to the racecourse and back so either is fine. Epsom Downs station is also OK but you have to walk a fair distance to the course from there.
The pubs beside the course are always heaving, as you’d expect. If you’re looking for a few beers beforehand I’d suggest getting into Epsom station early and going into a pub in town and then getting the bus from the station to the course.
I’ve never gone out in Epsom itself after the race but have been walking back through the town a couple hours after the last race and it’s what you’d expect, quite a lot of boozed up revellers who’re at the wrong end of a long day on it. I think Venusian’s advice about heading back into London is probably sound. Depends on what you are after really I guess.May 29, 2016 at 20:58 #1248661Agree with admin re town centre. After derby day the town centre is amock with young revellers who have not really handled the day excesses.
However there are great little places in the college area of town that have atmosphere but not the numbers including the rising sun, queens head, barley mow,the Alamo . Great little pubs that normally have bbqs etc that most outside of town don’t know about. All 5-7 mins from the Epsom station. Imo the best pub in Epsom is the Marqius but I wouldn’t go on oaks,Derby day.
