Westover will never trouble Desert Crown. He does not have the same tactical speed.
June 4, 2022 at 16:51 #1600568“Just wonder if Richard Kingscote went about half a furlong too earlier than ideal”
It’s possible – what I got very early was he was absolutely determined not to have traffic issues.
Broke handy, didn’t care about seeing a lot of daylight, got that perfect position one off the rail with nothing outside him and went for it early in the straight.
A very good colt did the rest.

This was only Desert Crown’s third race and he was on the outer in the Dante too. So not used to the hustle and bustle in amongst horses. Kingscote did the right thing win or lose on such an inexperienced horse.
Connections also knew what they had, the best horse in the race.
Value Is EverythingJune 4, 2022 at 17:03 #1600579The winner may turn out to be a very good horse indeed as this was only his 3rd start, but let’s don’t get carried away here. He beat a 150-1 chance by about 3 lengths. Nothing to rave about this particular performance…
June 4, 2022 at 17:08 #1600582What was that crazy fireworks thing about when horses were at the start?
One thing any horse hates is fireworks and to do that just before the Derby is crazy.
Probably ruined a few horses chance.Value Is EverythingJune 4, 2022 at 17:10 #1600584“Nothing to rave about this particular performance…”
I think we can rave about the burst of speed he showed to go clear. That was pure class. After that, I think he has paddled a bit in the last furlong and allowed the others to close the gap.
I would like to see him run in the Eclipse next, rather than the Irish Derby.

Agree it was crazy. There is a thread about it in the Horse Racing section.
June 4, 2022 at 17:14 #1600587The runner up has run the race of his career so far.
I’m rating the winner 120 and I think there’s more to come.
Kingscote has understandably ridden like a man absolutely determined not to mess up the biggest chance of his life on an inexperienced colt.
Run the race again in a month and he gets more cover, waits and waits and pounces a furlong later to win by five lengths going away.
Westover never beats him – EVER.
And Desert Crown has the speed to come back to 1m2f no bother.
Good Derby winner this.

Agreed. Can’t believe RTV spent so much time analysing Westover and implying he was unlucky. He will never beat Desert Crown even if he starts running now.
June 4, 2022 at 17:20 #1600589Ian,
You know as well as anyone else, in the world of horse racing “never say never”. That’s the beauty of the sport we all love!
June 4, 2022 at 17:21 #16005902/1 for the Arc, the betting world has gone totally mad. Very nice horse mind you, shades of Galileo’s win for me. WD those who collected.
June 4, 2022 at 17:23 #1600591I think Westover was unlucky to finish third, but I doubt whether he would have beaten Desert Crown. I’ll still be keeping an eye on him, though.

So don't run, just like the others always do
June 4, 2022 at 17:25 #1600592It was mentioned on ITV that several jockeys looked and that Nahanni especially appeared none to pleased about the fireworks going off and may have been a contributing factor in him being left at the start and considering he races on the pace any chance he had went there.
Not a smart idea to have fireworks – especially considering other horses that had already run were much closer to the noise being in the stable yard.

You’re absolutely right, sir – but I can’t be doing with sitting on the fence.
The only chance Westover would have would be in a St Leger run at insane pace and I predict Desert Crown will never set foot in sunny Doncaster in his entire life (Stoute learned his lesson there with Shergar a long time ago).
