Once again, there is no English filly contesting the prestigious and hugely valuable Prix de Diane today. I’ve been surprised, given the stance about prize money levels here, that more owners and trainers aren’t targeting their horses at these top French Group races. John Gosden apart, there’s been a mere sprinkling of English entries in the 3yo contests in particular this year.
Given the mob-handed levels of English participation in the Sprints currently, and in the past generally over all distances, is this just a passing phase? A coincidence? Or something of a sign indicating a shift back towards the supremacy of the breed in France over England, as in the 1950’s and 60’s?
June 12, 2011 at 08:58 #360232I don’t wonder at them in this particular case, Pinza. I can’t see any English or Irish fillies beating Galikova and Golden Lilac. Wavering too is a G1 winner. This field is stronger than the Oaks which of course was only run nine days ago.

Agreed,
nefertiti
about today’s field – Golden Lilac in particular must have frightened off plenty of potential opposition. Odd though that neither Coolmore nor Godolphin have mustered any challenge at all, nor any English or Irish filly been targeted at an event like the Diane, which was a bit of a goldmine for the British (in win and place money) during the 1980’s and 90’s.
Some analysis of the general trend might be in order…
June 12, 2011 at 12:16 #360261I can tell you why their is no Irish/British Horses running today because Galikova and Golden Lilac are by far the best 2 fillie’s in Europe. Hopefully one will come to Ireland and take on the best of ours and IMO will destroy them.
June 12, 2011 at 13:37 #360274Golden Lilac is a exceptional filly….

Best in Europe by far

Not a chance sorry.
A true Oaks trip would of seen her beaten 3l by Galikova.
June 12, 2011 at 13:48 #360281Galikova has no change of gear. Their is nothing to say Golden Lilac would beat her senseless over and extra 2f. Idled on the run in and was keen in the early stages. She would win the Irish Oaks in a canter as would Galikova
June 12, 2011 at 13:49 #360282Fabre has even entered her in the Arc…she is that good.

I too would like to see such an analysis but I’m not equipped to do it.

Re today’s race, Pinza, Wavering is a Darley-bred Godolphin horse, but obviously not an English one.
Wasn’t the winner good? It will be interesting to see whether Galikova can reverse the form in the Vermeille. Apparently Peslier has reported that she was not quite herself today.
June 12, 2011 at 14:32 #360299Head reported that she was outpaced which is the bleeding obvious to any one who watched the race. She didn’t have half the pace that the Golden Lilac did but at least she stayed on eventually. Goldikova will put the smiles back on connections faces in the coming week

Yes,
nefertiti
, Golden Lilac was superlative today, highlight of a memorable 4-pattern race day for Fabre to add to his Derby victory a week ago. In what seems to be a very weak crop of 3yo fillies, she is in a class by herself at the moment.
Hot on the heels of Zarkava, Stacelita and Sarafina, Golden Lilac looks another very good
Prix de Diane
winner indeed.
