Phase One, pre tournament: Certainty that England will win the World Cup.

Phase Two: During the tournament England meet a former wartime enemy.

Phase Three: The English concede that the game turned on one freakish piece of bad luck that could happen only to therm .

Phase Four: Moreover, everyone else cheated

Phase Five: England are knocked out without getting anywhere near lifting the cup.

Phase Six: The day after elimination, normal life resumes

Phase Seven: A scapegoat is found.

Phase Eight: England enter the next World Cup thinking they will win it.

Fantastic article by Bruce Millington in todays RP on page 105. Very appropriate but cannot seem to lift it and post it here.Titled" Ludicrous English optimism nothing short of hilarious."

I have read Bruce Millington’s article and thought it was only average and was too pessimistic – he does make a good point about the england goalkeeper situation though and one of the reasons that England have done better than expected in the past is because of our very good goalkeepers ( Banks, Shilton etc ).

Where are all these english people who think that england are going to win the WC every time they qualify for it :? I have only met a few.

Perhaps it’s because I live in a part of england which has never had a successful soccer team so we are used to failure but the vast majority of soccer fans that I know want England to win but actually think that Argentina, Brazil, Germany or Spain will win the WC every time it is played.

I realise the english media hype up England’s WC chances because it’s good business but as far as I am concerned it’s a myth that most english supporters expect England to win the WC every four years as I know very few who really think this way.

Don’t get sucked into believing everything you read in the papers and hear on tv !!

Spain’s record in World Cups is not as good as England, 3 quarters and a semi against England’s 6 quarters, a semi and a win. I suspect they have been weighed down by as much expectation as England over the years. They Spain did get a monkey off their back by winning the Euro 2008 to add to their triumph in 1964.

Past records in world cups are completely irrelevant. Too much is made of supposed hoo doos and history and so on

Spain probably have the best side in the world at the present time. I think they are oustanding. Brazil will have plenty of talented players but Germany are not up to scratch at all. Nor have they been for some time of course

The greatest joy is seeing argentina imploding under that obnoxious dwarf Maradona

    England?

Will be as strong a unit as anyone under the fine manager. Biggest possible problem is the lack of strikers of real class or form (aside from rooney) but thats counterbalanced by an unusually prolific midfield. But like France in the 80s perhaps

    They have a chance

But i share some of Grass’s sentiments although it is partly a case that we just grow out of Football rather than football becoming more immature

Buffon , Cannavarro, Del Piero, Gattuso, Totti, Nesta, Camoranesi, Inzaghi and Pirlo could all be argued as ‘world class’. That is one of the Italians strengths, the quality goes right through the squad, beyod justa few star names.

    Bloody hell

Could all (well mostly) be descrbed as coffin dodgers too

Funnily enough, In the far reaches of mainland Britain, Diego Armando Maradona ( aka, "the poison dwarf " ) still maintains something of a hero status.

I wonder why ?

Incidentally, wasn’t his less often discussed second goal against England in Mexico something quite magnificent ?! 8)

Although having never been prone to random acts of violence, and a ‘give peace a chance’ type of chap, if I ever met the little **** I would be unable to stop myself from smashing a housebrick straight into his ugly mug – repeatedly.

Rather than smash his already ugly mug from here to Buenos Aires, why not just cut off the hand of god? Or, having recently watched a few of the "Saw" films, why not set up some sort of weird trap whereby he has to redeem himself by cutting off his own hand!!!
