It could only be a preference to Newmarket and the distance of 10 furlongs which has prompted Jim Bolger to side with this race ahead of the Arc.
A crying shame if Phoenix Tower is declared a non-runner, after Archipenko was ruled out.
Will O’Brien be represented by a filly?
October 13, 2008 at 13:25 #184565AOB has said he is preparing Hebridean for the race.
However, like you, MDeering, I wonder if he will run a filly as well. (Hebridean is a gelding, and Coolmore would not have a problem with one of their fillies beating him.)
O’Brien has stated that Halfway to Heaven may go to the US for either the Mile or the Filly and Mare Turf. The first race should be for Henry surely, and either Listen or You’resothrilling would be more likely than HTH to get the 11 furlongs of the filly race. If she is ready to race again after her exertions in the Sun Chariot, why not try her against the boys, especially since the race seems to be cutting up.
Obviously, today’s 5 day decs will clarify the picture. HTH, Listen and YST are all entered at this point – but this afternoon?
All of them would have a mountain to climb in the Champion, of course, but I’d love to see Halfway to Heaven run.
October 13, 2008 at 17:13 #184603I think New Approach must have an outstanding chance in this race
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
October 13, 2008 at 18:56 #184635Yes, can anything beat New Approach in this weak renewal of a race that is really suffering because of its proximity to the Breeders’ Cup meeting?
Full of Gold and Linngari are the other (weak) Group 1 winners in the lineup, but I can’t see either of them being up to the task. Will Russian Cross/Twice Over/Famous Name provide the competition?
Sorry not to see any of the fillies run.

No cant see anything other then a New Approach victory. it is a shame with the Arc weekend and Breeders cup so close together that this race suffers because you would want to see the Derby winner taking on the better horses.

Even against this seemingly modest opposition, New Approach remains vulnerable over 10f on what could well be fast ground.
His last two efforts over this trip are certainly nothing to write home about; a 3.5l defeat by DOM, with the 117 rated Pipedreamer at his quarters, and a hard fought 0.5l win from the modest Traffic Guard, with stayer Mores Wells only just over a length behind them wouldn’t see me rush to take the even money, even with the guarantee of a run.
Upton Grey looks to have been put in to make the pace for the favourite, but that’s no foregone conclusion given his record to date, and with the rest of the opposition within a pound or two of each other, the whole race looks like an accident waiting to happen imo.October 14, 2008 at 00:39 #184680I like lightly raced 3yo colts for this, so will have a small win on Famous Name, but not with any degree of confidence. If i wasn’t attending, i’d probably leave well alone.
October 14, 2008 at 02:00 #184690Phoenix Tower has been retired to stud.
October 14, 2008 at 02:15 #184695This race is littered with ‘the form horses’ not being able to run up to their summers best. New Approach has gone backwards since the Derby and for me there is a doubt as to whether he could be relied to run up to that level. I’ll happily take him on.
October 14, 2008 at 04:41 #184706New Approach should win this.
At 5/4 I’d be inclined to take him on though….possibly with Twice Over.
If Famous Name isnt rode like a twit (a la Longchamp – Arc Day) i’d be inclined to have an EW nibble there too at 16s
October 14, 2008 at 05:39 #184708Famous Name did not run in the Irish 2,000 Guineas due to the firmness of the ground, and I’d be hesitant to play him if the ground holds up like a road on Saturday.
October 14, 2008 at 08:36 #184710Love to see Twice Over win it.
Henry’s gone close in a few G1 contests this year and deserves to win one.
Obviously NA and Russian Cross are shortlisted as well.
October 14, 2008 at 17:46 #184729Interesting money for Fabre’s runner today.

Might just be the hype due to Fabre supplementing the horse for this. The market seems to turn when Fabre does bring one over here but I think Russian Cross will get beaten here.
October 14, 2008 at 23:52 #184777French trainers have a reasonable record in this last couple of years?
October 15, 2008 at 01:50 #184790Twice Over for me. 3/3 at Newmarket, solid each way bet at 13/2.
