Having followed the Van der Wheil saga since it began in 1978 IMO the basic principles of following well backed, consistent runners still holds merit.
System
1. Only class 3 or higher races to be considered, where there is winning form in the field.
2. All the short-odds division runners of restricted races are assessed and the 3 highest rated are shortlisted.Suggested Betting Plans
1. Support all 3 where practicable to level stakes.
2. For simplicity, where the shortest possible is Odds-on No Bet. Where the shortest odds are Evens back just that one. Longer than Evens – 2/1 support the top 2. Shortest 85/40 or longer support all 3.
3. Alternatively bet to return 100 points on 1, 2 or 3 to a maximum of 70%.Sedgefield 2.20 Nov 11 in order of merit. (Odds shown are from Betfair).

LarryNovember 15, 2008 at 22:14 #189954Larry,
Thank you for your kind remarks.
It seem to me threads generate more interest when they are controversial. With this, it was just that I read another thread inquiring whether VDW principles are still relevant. I was just hoping to show that higher class, consistency and the short half of the market are indeed relevant, nothing more than that.January 24, 2009 at 16:32 #206221Formath
Where are Mtoto, JIB, GJ, Johnb etc posting these days?
Any idea?
RegardsJanuary 24, 2009 at 17:49 #206244Francis,
I have no idea as I was never part of the ‘VDW circus’.

"I have no idea as I was never part of the ‘VDW circus."
Surely you wrote one of the booklets on VDW published by Tony Peach? If so, doesn’t that make you one of the principal performers?

You are correct generally, but my interpretation of the VDW correspondence differs from many of the most ardent of his followers. This puts me at odds with them so I don’t join their debate regarding how trainers place their charges, for example.
January 25, 2009 at 19:54 #206461Good to see a thread focusing on the application of VDW in practice rather than the theoretical aspects, which are fine too but which do tend to dominate.

Cheers.
I think the biggest problem with VDW is the tendency of those who haven’t studied it at all (judging by their comments) to offer trenchant comments about it – still, in many areas of life the ignorant are not slow in sounding off. On here, on the thread started by Mtoto, it seemed to be principally those who have given up trying to find winners and instead look for something called "value" (which of course exists, but not in the way most value-hunters misguidedly believe – "true" odds and all that rubbish).
