Interesting observations chaps, but i am not going to let you put me off him! If the ground stays Gd/frm and not loose on top with watering then
Tax Free will stretch his toe and the field! I wonder if i can get a price for
breaking the course record, with that tail wind behind them!!May 13, 2009 at 11:57 #227286I’ll go with Sir Gerry
May 13, 2009 at 12:09 #227289This could well shape up to be a battle between Tax Free and Equiano again and I’ll side with Equiano if it does. But I’ll be waiting to see if the money arrives for Hitchens before I have a bet. The money usually comes when David Barron has a strong fancy and in Hitchens, he has a horse that might be able to justify it.
Hey- surely if you fancy Hitchens on that basis the £14k they put up to supplement him speaks volumes?
Thats a very valid point HWTH. I’d still be a little happier if the money come in the build up to the race.
May 13, 2009 at 12:11 #227290I think David Barron has had one or two gambles go astray in recent weeks, but I was mightily impressed by Hitchens’ victory over Knot In Wood and will happily take him against the front two.
Yeah he has. There was one day a couple of weeks ago where he had 2 runners, one backed off the boards that flopped and the other drifted to 20/1 and made all to win.
May 13, 2009 at 12:18 #227291Hitchens looked very good at Thirsk, but he beat a seial non-winner in Wi Dud and a horse that was never likely to be seen to best effect in a 4-runner race. He also won really well first time up last year and didn;t really go on from that, so I think there are reasons for thinking he may be the sort of horse that is at his best fresh.
May 13, 2009 at 12:48 #227296I’m all over King’s Apostle here. Usually needs his first run and best at 6f so his debut was highly respectable. Despite the 3lbs penalty Laddies 16-1 looks big. Looks like plenty of speed on with the 5f specialists unlikely to last home, he can get involved late.
May 13, 2009 at 12:53 #227297To be backing Equiano as favourite you’d have to buy into the stories about the injury and that he’s a happier horse this year. Nothing in the form book should put him top of the market for this.
I like Kings Apostle. He’s beaten a Nunthorpe winner, a Breeders Cup Sprint runner up and the winner of The Cammidge Trophyin his last 4 runs. The run at Newmarket last time over an inadequate 5f had prep written all over it. He’s won at the course and ground won’t be a problem. Only slight worry would be Liam Jones not making enough use of him but at 16/1 he’s certainly value when compared to the favourite.
Utmost Respect through Tiza in France has the form but would properly want softer, Hatta Fort’s form through Imbongi and JJ The Jet Plane in Dubai would have made him interesting but you couldnt be inspired by his run at Newmarket last time, still an interesting horse to keep an eye on.

Actually scrap that, just seen the price on him. Captain Gerrard e/w.

It’s races like this that usually have me running for cover. I love to watch them but betting in them other than having a few quid ew for interest doesn’t appeal to me. However this is a very interesting rematch
There’s a lot of debate about whether Tax Free can win in dcent company over 6f.
Without wishing to get involved in a long drawn out argumant about this, I would think the horse is in great form and that is the important factor here.
If he can win over 7f most likely if in top form he will go with the best of them. However Equiano is likely to be up there and out of trouble along with Tax Free and Barry Hills has a canny knack of improving horses in his care. 1/2 a length doesn’t seem much for him to make up.
6/1 and 1/4 the odds seems very generous to me and as it could go either way I’m having a good EW to cut down on the risk.
May 13, 2009 at 17:00 #227367I like Knot In Wood at the prices (33’s).
Appears to be priced up based on his conditions race behind Hitchens, which as DJ has said, was never going to suit. Big field / strong pace will suit much more.
May 13, 2009 at 18:32 #227378The only niggly doubt I had was why they left the visor off KA today- you’d have to think it might have made the difference as he got too far back early.
May 13, 2009 at 18:48 #22738016’s is a right price for the Ascot race surely? He’ll be likely taking on horses running for the second time in a week
May 13, 2009 at 21:58 #227411The one horse we all rate but thought the ground was too soft wins!
How many of us wouldve been on if it was soft

Decent performance there from Utmost Respect

Tax Free ran a blinder, No excuses there! Kings Apostle should have won
really! As for Utmost Respect the Silver cup winner to Group 2 winner
and lightly raced! Some horse! I can remember backing Zidane at Newcastle when Utmost won, Bloody Zidane!!May 13, 2009 at 23:54 #227433The only niggly doubt I had was why they left the visor off KA today- you’d have to think it might have made the difference as he got too far back early.
Even bigger days ahead when he’s racing off levels. Reckon they could be just the finishing touch he needs. Ran a cracker today.
May 14, 2009 at 00:23 #227437Must admit to having a bit of Hill’s 16/1 (by proxy!) tonight for the Golden Jubilee as today’s race has been a good guide to it in recent years and I have KA as the moral winner today given his penalty, lack of visor and possible disadvantage given he challenged widest out. Overdose is currently injured and Takeover Target isn’t getting any younger.

Apparnatly Overdose’s injury is not the worry now it’s his hooves. A French vet reshaped his shoes this week using the same method, using a special glue, that was successful with Marchand d’Or.
The shoes have to be changed at the begining of June and in time he will switch to using carbon fibre to shoe him.
I would imagine he’s about ready to start doing som light work and the Jubilee must be a possibilty.
Any win only bets against this horse, before we know for sure if he runs or not are bordering on the insanity. If he makes it the race will be over after a furlong.
