My youngest daughter and a few friends went to that Newbury meeting. Previously she had very much enjoyed the racing when accompanying me at Lingfield and other local courses. She said the train up to Newbury was packed with people already drunk and they got no sober on the course. She was really upset and disappointed as was very much looking forward to showing her friends what a good day out racing could be.

Angry punter holds up race
An angry punter, seemingly the worse for drink, held up the third race at Carlisle on Monday night for fully eight minutes after remaining on the course and shouting abuse at jockeys.
The man, who appeared to be in his 30s, made his way down the middle of the course to the five furlong start, where the six juvenile runners were assembled, and, despite requests for him to go back under the rails, he refused to leave the course for several minutes.
A deputation of course workers drove down the track to speak to the man, who, by this time had moved back under the rails, though not before angrily shouting at the jockeys. Once the race was over, he was approached by two police officers, who could be seen putting handcuffs on the man and leading him away.
Tom Eaves, who rode the unplaced Liberty Lodge in the race, said; "He was shouting stuff at us as we walked around at the start and wouldn’t get out of the way." The race was eventually won by the favourite Zelos Girl, ridden by Saleem Golam and trained by Rae Guest.
Monday night’s incident at Carlisle follows spectator trouble at Newmarket, Sandown and Newbury earlier this summer.
August 4, 2008 at 23:15 #176114Saw the incident on Replay on RUK.
If Ginger McCain had been their he would have just suggested that the jockeys run over the drunken tosspot.
Am at Haydock this Saturday so will be interesting to see what the crowd will be like with the Championship and Leagues 1 and 2 beginning again.
Something needs to be done by racetracks and one thing that must happen is to ban booze from the front of Grandstands and from around the paddock area.
And anyone being arrested on a racecourse for drunken behaviour must be banned for life from all racecourses and sporting stadia.
Ive been to Rugby games where people have had beer and not heard any bad or offensive language in the stands and anyone who did swear where told straightaway to moderate their language.

Racecourses won’t deny entry to a guy whos willing to spend his cash on drink and possibly a few loose bets but then again I suppose its the old issue of money, " do what you want as long as you part with your cash ",
August 5, 2008 at 07:52 #176127To be keeping up with other racecourses in promoting boozing Brighton have a card this Wednesday 6th Aug all sponsored by the alcohol industry.
August 5, 2008 at 08:44 #176129Like any other industry or business venture the folk that own racing want to screw as much money out of as many people as they can. If that means making a small fortune selling cheap beer to people silly enough the buy it, then that’s what will happen.
August 5, 2008 at 08:49 #176133"Cheap beer"????………on a racecourse?
