Betting on Irish racing is not something I like doing as I’m firmly of the opinion that it’s not even half as honest as the action in this country, but the 2.50 at Down Royal this afternoon was an absolute disgrace.
Dingle Belle was fully entitled to be odds-on favourite (may have gone off at even money in the end) but was given fully 30l to make up in the final 2.5 furlongs and, unsurprisingly, couldn’t manage it – not that she had much encouragement from the man on top though.
This is by no means limited to the favourite, as all bar one sat miles off the pace and allowed the winner as much of a lead as he liked. Barney Curley and Mark Prescott playing the handicap system is one thing, but this surely does nothing but put people off horseracing altogether – or make the promise of inside information so appealing that success will become a measure of who can cheat best.

Riddler when you’ve sorted out UK racing can you come over here please???
