The Gambling Act of 2005 includes three main licensing objectives, the third of which involves "protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling."
One of our major high street bookmakers is currently running an advertising campaign imploring us to bet at any time and in any place via our mobile phones. It isn’t a stretch of the imagination to suggest that anybody under 18 with the wit to discover their parents’ credit card details could find a way to gamble; in addition, the usage of mobile phones and appearance of these commercials during football matches could easily be construed as targeting a teenage audience.
It all looks as though it should be investigated, to this cynic at least.
December 18, 2010 at 21:35 #333169The onus should be on parents to keep their credit cards away from the theiving mitts of their snotgoblins then shouldn’t it?
December 19, 2010 at 09:26 #333200I think kids should be educated about gambling at an early age, as they are about sex. Then perhaps they won’t try to sneak into Ladbrokes and play slot machines at the age of 16 or buy lottery tickets. Instead, they’ll be outside hassling adults to put each-way doubles on two 5-1 second favourites in 9-runner novice hurdles.
