Quote: from dave 22 on 10:54 pm on Dec. 5, 2006[br]do you not think hardy looked back to himself at ascot?
when i saw him last year i thought he looked like he had past his best, but he looked much healthier this season. and they both stay well, so neither should be stopping, i think it will come down to who is the fastest up the hill.
At Ascot he beat a three mile stayer the rest were useless.
where would ameeq be rated alongside that lot?? For me this is about prices, I dont think Hardy is gone at all and i thought he ran very well in the champion last year. And if he was on the slide towards the end and this was due to age, he would be well gone by now in my opinion.
I like DC but he is the great white (grey) hope and we all know where alot of them end up. Until I see him beating these top class older horses, Ill have these strong feelings that he is overhyped completely and given the right odds (and I will stress that) I will be backing the man to get the better of the boy.

December 6, 2006 at 11:07 #30733This race will be closer than the betting suggests in my opinion. both horses have cracking cheltenham form. hardy eustace is going to be giving detroit city 4lb. do you think this will make much difference?
December 7, 2006 at 18:45 #30734I sure wish Detroit City wasn’t facing the haredy lad before the Champion. Just my opinion. ÂÂÂ
I seem to remember Mark Johnson ruing that two of his top stayers had raced against each other.
But then, I’m not a trainer, still less DC’s, so if my fears are correct, and he loses or struggles to win at Chelters – and I hope not – it would most likely be for some reason other than my "insight" into how to train a horse to win a Champion Hurdle.

December 8, 2006 at 07:55 #30735I am wrong, I am sure that Richard Johnson said after the triumph hurdle last year that 2m is plenty short for DC. I don’t see this horse as a champion hurdler.

December 8, 2006 at 16:44 #30736philip hobbs horses dont seem to be running up to thier form this week. i hope its just down to the horses not being good enough and detroit city puts in a good effort tomorrow.
December 8, 2006 at 20:08 #30737I’ve laid Detroit City and backed Hardy Eustace in tomorrow’s match up, former has it to prove against horses like Hardy Eustace, latter just needs to run to Ascot form imhaho

December 9, 2006 at 12:49 #30739Not sure what to make of Desert Storm, but well backed and bombed
I’d be tad worried if i’d took a short price on DC
December 9, 2006 at 13:05 #30740Kalca Home ran well enough , so that should settle the twitching DC backers
December 9, 2006 at 15:17 #30741Around Chelters, against HU, a lay IMO
December 9, 2006 at 15:25 #30742OK. He won, but 4lbs for a length? I know what one i’d take in the Champion.
DC is the real thing though, again IMO. But not entitled to be fav for the CH.
December 9, 2006 at 15:27 #30743Jonhson got his tactics spot on
Properly run race HE outstays DC imhaho
December 9, 2006 at 19:54 #30744im the opposite!
I think it could well be these two that show up in March. My slight concern with HE was that having seen him at ascot, to my untutored eye, he looked possibly trained for an early season campaign
It was a difficult race today in many ways and the slow early pace was no use to either. suspected it would end up the way it did. DC didnt look that happy and his hurdling wasnt fluent at all. HE hurdles quite beautifully of course
would be wonderful to see HE win back his crown though.
December 9, 2006 at 20:04 #30745If Conor O’Dwyer learns to ride the horse properly come March (i.e. force the pace and put him into his hurdles, rather than easing him off half a furlong out, approaching the last) then Hardy Eustace will be right up there at the finish.
Detroity City is as big a lay as I’ve seen this season.

I thought that too, having seen him earlier on TV today he looked well muscled up for this stage of the season, and his Ascot form was a deal better than his usual early efforts.
Maybe today was his Champion Hurdle?
December 9, 2006 at 23:57 #30747Very soft ground today didn’t suit either horse particularly. Detroit City to win easier on better ground for me. Worthy Champion hurdle favourite and he’s still entitled to be improving.
December 10, 2006 at 00:12 #30748Having won 2 Champion Hurdles from the front, it’s hard to understand why HE wasn’t allowed to bowl along in front from the off.

Surely you jest! It is highly unlikely that there is anything other than a 3rd Champion Hurdle in mind for connections.
