Derby to be run at 1.30pm to accommodate a shift in the FA Cup kick off time.
April 26, 2023 at 13:08 #1645459Like The Ebor, should never have been moved from the Wednesday.
April 26, 2023 at 13:27 #1645460I recall a similar situation when Shaamit won in 1996. I think that was to avoid a clash with an England match in the European championships.
I suppose the authorities have been left with no choice but it is still very unsatisfactory. Presumably the whole meeting will have to start about 12.30pm because I doubt the Derby will be the first race. That will affect the travel plans for lots of people journeying from afar. Plenty will have already booked and will now face a rush to get to Epsom in time.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"April 26, 2023 at 15:01 #1645470Not much consolation to those attending this year but it should be a one-off as this football season has been affected by the November/December World Cup.
April 26, 2023 at 15:30 #1645477Dave Yates just suggested half time would have been a possibility if the times could have been guaranteed
Although he did seem to think one half of football was only 40 mins.April 26, 2023 at 16:04 #1645483Nice idea but not practical. Without wishing anything unfortunate on anyone, it would only take a bad injury in the football for something like 10 minutes of time to be added to the half.
Then there is no guarantee the race will be off on time for a whole variety of reasons. It was seven minutes late off last year and clashed with a maiden at Listowel.
April 26, 2023 at 18:34 #1645532Why does everything have to revolve around football? 🙄
Derby Day is about the build up to the big race, the horses, the history and the characters. It all seems very rushed 1.30 is much to early for the horses taking part in particular the O’Brien horses who often are flown over on the same day and will have little time to adjust and the traffic around the course will be horrendous with people who usually have a casual lunch and arrive after the first race rushing to be there earlier than usual.I’m with Yeats put the Derby back in it’s rightful place..
The first Wednesday of the month of June.Jac

Because it’s much more popular than racing, Jac, as I’m sure you know.
I just think it’s the occasional price racing pays for having terrestrial coverage.
And what modern big sporting event prioritises spectators over the wishes of the majority of a TV audience?

Blackbeard to conquer the World
April 26, 2023 at 20:47 #1645561Given the football will also be shown live on BBC1, what a pity that Epsom/JCR/BHA don’t just tell ITV to do one. If they insist they have to compete pointlessly with the BBC over the football, let the Derby be shown on ITV4.
Which option is going to produce the bigger audience – 1:30 on ITV1 or 4:30 on ITV4? I think we can all work out which option would produce the bigger betting turnover.
I do sometimes wonder if jobs running racing require the applicant to fail an aptitude test.
April 26, 2023 at 21:17 #1645564James Crespi, General Manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said:
“This year, the first Saturday in June will play host to two Derby’s and two of Britain’s great sporting events.
In order to give fans of both horseracing and football the opportunity to enjoy the Betfred Derby and the FA Cup Final and to maximise the publicity and exposure of these two iconic sporting occasions, which will both be broadcast live on ITV1, we have made some changes to our usual schedule.
“We are grateful to our partners at ITV and our generous sponsors Betfred for their help in facilitating the move, and we can’t wait for what is sure to be a great afternoon for British sport.”
10 out of 10 to Mr Crespi for trying to put a positive spin on a humiliation.
April 26, 2023 at 22:06 #1645569To be blunt, the general public doesn’t give a toss about the Derby any more.
I imagine that ITV is contractually obliged to show both events on the main channel and whilst even the Cup Final doesn’t hold quite the same appeal as it once did, there is only one winner even though the football is already on the BBC who will attract orders of magnitude more viewers than ITV, as they do every time an event is shared.
We have the annual bemoaning of the move to the weekend just as football fans lament the fact that the Cup Final coverage no longer starts at 9am. Neither are ever coming back so forget about it.
April 26, 2023 at 22:12 #1645571Compare Derby day in the 70s/80s to the last few years , Cheltenham and Aintree have grown …. The Derby has shrank

Of course I do Ian..just wanted to have a moan.
At least they didn’t cancel the 2000 Guineas on Coronation Day, It will be screened around the racecourse and the race will be run as normal.
I know some Premier League football matches have been disrupted over that weekend so racing wins in that respect. JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 27, 2023 at 03:52 #1645594I don’t quite get it. The FA Cup Final was due to start around 5pm up to 5.30pm.
Because of the possible trouble with it being the 1st Man U Man City final in it’s
151 year history. Apparantly the Met objected and said the match had to start no
later than 4.45pm. So what brainbox decided to bring it forward to 3pm. Why not
4.45 as the police had requested and at least the Derby could have been run at a
respectible 4pm, or even 3.30pm.As for the FA Cup Final being the be all and end all, that might be the case in
England, I’m not so sure that you could carry that assurance across Scotland
Ireland and Wales. The Derby is the Derby, and it’s being treated like some Saturday
afternoon handicap. Has the Epsom Derby, an event that certainly was watched World
Wide fallen so low, or have the right people not stood their ground and used the
suggestion of the police that the match should start no later that 4.45.The Derby being the 2nd race on an 8 race card is shocking. Last year there were more
than 50 Broadcasters, with the race being shown live in The US with a 1 hour early
viewing coverage, it was also shown live in Poland France Switzerland and Portugal.
Add to that that Cazoo Derby day had attracted several first-time takers, who were
transmitting live racing coverage. These include Eclat (14 countries in South-East
Asia), NENT (Scandinavia), Wedotv (Germany, Switzerland and Austria), Polsat (Poland)
and Charlton (Israel). Other first-timers include Sony Pictures Network and Wasu.TV
dedicated a special one-hour show to the race in India and China respectively. CNN had
their coverage to 370 million households. Some people at Epsom and the The Jockey Club need to grow some.

Presumably the FA decided on the 3pm kick off. Not sure what Epsom could do about that.
Even if 4.45pm had been chosen, it is highly unlikely ITV would have agreed a 4pm start time for the Derby. It wants at least an hour (and by the looks of it 90 minutes) for all the FA Cup final preview material.
Running the race at half time is impractical. After the football would mean a start time of 6pm at the earliest, which would almost certainly mean the race being shown on ITV4 instead. And I doubt the police would want the race going off at that time either.
A 1.30pm start has its own problems but it looks like the authorities have decided it is the least worst option and guarantees coverage on the main ITV channel. Given the circumstances, I think it was the only decision they could make.
It is a sign of where racing stands in the sporting pecking order, at least as far as the media is concerned.
