Mind you if both big guns do appear at Haydock hopefully Stormez will come out of retirement and someone will puncture the tyres on the fences on the morning of the race
You could probably puncture the fences themselves, actually. Bleeding bouncy castle abberations.

March 18, 2008 at 11:37 #152214Denman may be ill-suited by the King George, but great horses can win under any conditions, like Kauto Star. Never be a great horse to me unless he can show some sign of versatility.
Denman would piss the KG if Kauto Star wasn`t in it. Brigadier Gerard was a great horse who won a King George despite not staying 12f – because there were no 135+ horses in that renewal to expose this.
I disagree.
The Brigadier won, therefore, by my reckoning, he stayed.

March 19, 2008 at 14:08 #152582The King George is the premier three-mile chase contest in NH racing. It represents an entirely different challenge to the Gold Cup. It’s on a right-handed course and places the emphasis very much on speed, not just stamina.
Great horses can win both the Gold Cup and King George. It’s a shame that Denman’s connections do not even seem to be considering it.
If Findlay is so adamant that Denman is superior (he breaks other horses hearts!!) then why, it seems, is he avoiding such prestigious races, especially those where Kauto is sure to run?

That’s a very, very shortsighted comment. MMuch too simplistic.
March 19, 2008 at 15:21 #152590Compared with the way Kauto has been campaigned in looks as though connections of Denman are aiming for him to be the new Best Mate
Is Denman a glorified Beef or Salmon? Only to be seen at his best when conditions are ….just so?
I hope not and agree that he has to at least go for races that arent perfectly laid out if hes to be considered a great.

Not yet. Denman has a good way to go before he has a Grade 1 CV as long as Beef or Salmon’s.
March 19, 2008 at 15:59 #152596As long as he retains his ability on a right-handed course, I think Denman would have been a certainty had he been entered in the Whitbread this year.
Kauto Star is entered instead (2-1 with a run) but I just couldn’t see him staying 3m5f.

With reference to this, why is it that no-one asks for Denman to be campaigned away from his comfort zone (ie – optimum conditions)?
A true champion is both versatile and talented, and the only one we have in that mould currently is Kauto Star.
A question for all .. if Denman and Kauto Start race 3 times next year, once in the Betfair Chase, once in the king George and then the Gold Cup, and Kauto wins the first 2 and Denman retains the Gold Cup – which is the better horse?
March 19, 2008 at 21:31 #152689the answer is Kauto Salselon. ive long though that there is too much hype about one race. The KGV was for many years won by simply the better rated horse anyway

And Beefy still has along way to go before he can jump as well as Denman…let alone travel so smoothly

The advantage Denman would have is that Exotic Dancer is better (IMO) going left handed but he’s still capable of low 170’s performances at Kempton. There wouldn’t be much between he and Denman.
