at last a decent title to a thread concerning gold cup, cannot believe the people on other threads going on and on about the placed horses, denman was a machine today, his jumping brill and he kept up a lovely rhythm between fences, to say this was a disappointing race is frankly sad .

Fantastic performance today but has there ever been a horse built more for Aintree than this ‘tank’. Surely the 2009 Gold Cup should be used merely as a prep for the National! Would be fascinating to see what mark Phil Smith would give him but his Hennessy exploits show he has all the tools required to run a cracker in the race.

Indeed, dj – I’ve just said about the same on another thread. You can’t really see Bechers or the Chair fazing him, can you!

Denman would be as near to a cert as you could get in the national. He’s built to carry weight look what he did in the Hennessy.

If ever there was a horse made for a national its Denman.

Denman is a very worthy champion. Today he was immense; he jumped and travelled so well throughout the race.

As a devout Kauto fan it’s easy to make excuses for my horse but I simply believe he got beat by the better horse on the day. Regardless of how Kauto jumped, how he travelled or how he took to the ground he would have needed an excellent performance to pass Denman in my opinion.

This is Denman’s day – congratulations.

I had the iggest bet on my life on Kauto Star at 5/4 this morning… it lost… but it got beaten by the better horse and if I didn’t get a race so what…. MM is right seems a lot of new posters with imaginery wallets to rival the size of their mouths.

Well done Denman – don’t see how Kauto can turn the tables.

He’s built to carry weight, jump like a stag and gallop all day. What’s not to like? And with Harry Findlay having a say, I can see such an audacious route being more likely than with most connections!

Chris McGrath summed it up in The Independent. He said that if Denman won it would be by a wide margin, whereas a KS vistory would probably be a lot closer.

Hope Halcon Genelardais takes Denman on at Aintree next year. If Denman goes, most will be out of the handicap, even if Phil Smith is lenient to Denman.

With the class in the staying chaser division currently, the National must be Halcon Genelardais best chance of a top-race win. Getting a stone or so, he could well stay on to give Denman a fright up the elbow.

It’s human to sometimes have one’s opinion affected by a bet, but I would say most of the peeps on here are objective in their analysis of the racing.

I didn’t have any dosh on Denman as I had been caned by the bookies at that point.

Irrespective of whether I had backed him or not, it was a stupendous prerformance.

Imo, Denman has run a truly "great" race. On the day he was superb in beating a fantastic horse in KS.

I think the form is rock solid. Yes – perhaps KS was not quite his supreme self, but I think that detracts from Denman’s awesome galloping brutality.

I actually don’t think KS will ever beat him at Cheltenham.

Which is a scary proposition for any opponoent.

Do think some have got the wrong end of the stick (or whip).

Those who are disappointed are only disappointed because Kauto did not run to form.

That is not to decry Denman, he can not help it if his stable mate does not jump well enough.

Even with Kauto running poorly, it was still an awsome performance by Denman. Best for many a year.

    Thanks for your post, Bulwark.

I’m not long back from the course, but I thought they went fairly steadily to start, and, having read other posts on this forum, I got the ( wrong impression) that times were slow.

Denman found it much easier going than the others, but that Neptune gave him a hell of a good race! The hard challenge may take its toll on the third home.
The winner is a proper chaser, imo. Seemed much bigger and more dominant than the others.

Btw, I didn’t see you there , Fists? Whereabouts were you?

    What a festival – what a race!

I can’t believe some are saying it was a disappointing race

    Mike

I can – just like some idiots on this and other forums slagged Katchit’s win.

Just cos Kauto was ridden by Walsh his fan club will be making the same excuses him and his dad were trying to make on C4 – the ground. Oh, so thats why he ran up to form with Exotic Dancer, improving on his winning distance over that horse compared with the 2007 GC and the Betfair this season.

There are a lot of really bitter people on these sites this week, and instead of heralding some really vintage Cheltenham moments that will be talked about by our grandchildren, they are quoting RPRs and their own sad handicaps to knock performances.

Denman is a machine. And it is all the more annoying to recall how the **** Walsh got him beat two years ago at Cheltenham!

Denman was the best horse on the day. What you are suggesting is rubbish, i.e. the Walsh fan club etc….KS did not travel like he normally does, if he had of and Denman still beat him then fair enough. If you think KS gave his through running you are living in cloud cuckoo land. As for Denman been beaten by Nicanor, the reason was because Nicanor was a superior hurdler, but this is plain to see if you watch the race.

tbh, it wasn’t tht big a margin of victory considering all of KS blunders, it is obvious to anyone, if kauto cleared every fence that denman cleared, then Kauto star would have won, and probably by some way, and don’t even start with the denman pace worried kauto, kauto is easily capable and proven to travel that fast and jump fluently, its just on this day it wasn’t to be, if you dnt think KS can beat Denman at cheltenham then you know nothing about horse racing, you only have to watche the last two furlongs to see that KS is absolutely unbelievable, its like when he struggled in the race with monets garden, he was never quite right, yet he started to get back at him at the end, the same in this b4 he hit the last fence though he lost, and denman ran a GREAT race, it has merely pleased me to see how well kauto did do considering he had major problems. imean minus just the really bad jump on the last fence and KS would have been extremely close to Denman at the end, he really was machining along, so just wait and seee a race when he actually jumps properly ;) i can’t wait lol
