I dunno, I would imagine so .. zorrogps .. ftw!
February 7, 2012 at 19:37 #20940With the cost of the NHS growing, what is the answer?
Every week, if not day, there’s an advancement in medical research for the NHS / us to pay for.
With the percentage of our money going to the NHS increasing all the time…
Is the coalition’s changes the answer?
Or is there another solution?Value Is EverythingFebruary 8, 2012 at 00:17 #390264They just put VAT up by 2% and the tax on fuel in general is astronomical .. I would suggest we all are paying for a full time doctor each already =)
February 8, 2012 at 13:49 #390328The last Labour Government’s over-paying of GPs hasn’t helped. More VAT could mean people buy fewer goods, and so less money going in to the pot. And even if it did work, the way costs are going up won’t pay for it for long.
Should those in the highest tax bracket be made to go private?
Should we keep humans alive when anyone with a dog in the same condition is prosecuted for cruelty?
With advancements in medicine, time will come when drugs enable everyone to live forever. The World will become over populated. When will we need to say "no more medical research"?
With NHS spending spiralling out of control, is there anything else we can do to cut the cost?
Value Is EverythingFebruary 8, 2012 at 14:14 #390331Hi Ginge, spiralling out of control compared to what?
Private medical insurance in the US cost more to run and deliver less.
I blame the drug companies for rising costs, I would like to see them taken into government ownership and run as non-profit organisations.
February 8, 2012 at 18:49 #390381Am a great believer in the NHS Dave and certainly wouldn’t want any other nation’s health service. Especially not the USA’s.
As I said, when every week we hear of improvements in medical health that the NHS has to find money to pay for. Or occasionally NICE says "no". But with every advancement comes cost. Percentage of our taxes going in to the NHS is bound to keep rising.
I am asking is there is a better way than the coalition’s NHS reforms to make our money go further? Even the Labour party say (or at least used to say) we can’t go on like we’ve been doing.
Another point is that these advancements will lead to fewer deaths. Over-population and keeping people living with machines and medicine. Already, with a dip in birth rates we’ve got problems with pensions being slashed and an aging population. As medical research "improves" we’ll have more and more life saving oporations (because if a life can be saved it is saved). Not enough people working and a forever aging population until it becomes unsustainable.
Is there an answer to the World’s aging / over-population?
Can’t see privatisation of drug companies being the answer to NHS problems Dave. Companies would just go elsewhere, yet another industry goes abroad.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 8, 2012 at 18:59 #390384Ecky thump Ginge! I was just feeling upbeat and optimistic and about to get the Mrs to nip out to the Tesco One-Stop to get me a large chocolate cake for breakfast tomorrow, and then I read your last post.
You raise some great issues though. Aging population, greater medical advances prolonging a population already (in the main) living too long. Two things I do know though:-
One: I don’t know the answer and
Two: You can be certain none of our useless politicians (in Westminster or Brussels) do either.February 8, 2012 at 19:05 #390387
Bit heavy I know insomniac.
Just thought I’d drive the forum to suicide.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 8, 2012 at 20:54 #390399Well that would reduce the population a bit!
February 9, 2012 at 00:10 #390426I thought immigration was supposed to sort all the ageing population, pension crisis, declining birth rate twaddle out .. or was that just another load of bull? lol.
In answer to your question ginge, i would say no. Healthcare is expensive and what we have in this country is perfcet I think. But that’s just my opinion ofc
