No idea why this was in the Doncaster Free Press but the author is having a go at Newbury for it’s dress code.
December 5, 2013 at 21:09 #460866I was there last weekend in the Premier Enclosure and I just don’t think it was an issue. There were lots of "dodgy geezers", "suitably dressed", and I kept my hand in my pocket holding my money, as one does at many such occasions when there is a crowd. We even had a competition between ourselves about the most embarrassing suit! Many of them didn’t even watch the races. I am a National Hunt fan and generally get much more satisfaction from visiting "small" racecourses where you find genuine racing fans and no issue about why they’re wearing.
It’s notable that Ascot have a separate NH dress code without the restrictions that Newbury are applying. Cheltenham is suitably relaxed about its dress code with, let’s face it, much better racing.
Newbury needs to have a reality check (if those in charge know what that means!). If the reports of people being rudely decamped to the grandstand are true then those responsible should be sacked!
Any business that thinks it’s a good idea to call itself "The Racecourse Newbury" rather than "Newbury Racecourse" has transparently lost the plot!
If they carry on in this vein then they should be relieved of their premier graded races. #arses
December 6, 2013 at 10:16 #460899My blog space has been offered to any racecourse exec who wants to defend dress codes. No takers so far.
What do they hope to gain commercially from them? How does it bolster the image of the sport?
Whatever Newbury’s answer to the questions, they don’t apply them on a Sunday – dress codes are not in operation at Sunday meetings at Newbury…work that one out
December 6, 2013 at 15:34 #460919I am a Newbury member. Their new dress code will put peaople off going racing.
Often seems racecourses are quite happy to supply a constant stream of alcohol for racegoers to get drunk. May be if Newbury sold jeans and T-shirts from an "outlet"…
Dress codes were once used to keep the riff-raff – who occasionally caused trouble – out. These days, even riff-raff can afford a suit and racecourses themselves encourage trouble by allowing too much drink swallowed.
In Winter the one thing racegoers should be concerned about is warmth. Jackets and collared shirts don’t keep the cold out.
On Saturday, not only did we have the new dress-code to contend with, but also stopped from using my usual route to Grandstand. Walk up two flights of stairs only to be told "sorry sir, can’t use that route today". Instead of 15 steps along the corridor – had to go back down the stairs, across the ground floor and up another couple of flights. Princess Anne apparently needs the corridor kept clear for her enterage exclusive use all day. This despite there being a "Royal Box" at Newbury.
