Big fancy of mine for last year’s Champion Hurdle was Saint Roi, but his season fell apart a bit. If he didn’t boost his claims for The Champion Hurdle on Sunday, then he might just be more interesting for another tilt at this.

Yard have a few likely ones near the head of the market, with the likes of El Fabiolo, Micro Manage, Farout, and Echoes In Rain already getting a fair few mentions.

If it wasn’t to be Saint Roi, then I’d still be interested in others from the yard, and others at 20’s+ include Whiskey Sour, and Annamix, who both appeal quite a bit.

Be some effort for last years winning trainer to repeat the feat, but I’m keen on his pair of Suprise Package and Visionarian on Sunday, and I could see me being very interested in them for this.

I have had an early bet though, and it’s a horse I know really well, Petit Mouchoir. Ran a cracker in it last year, and his run in The Limestone Lad, showed he’s as good as ever.

Cashed out Echoes In Rain. Probably end up in the 150s now and may not even run.

Sea Ducor 20-1 non runner no bet.

I’m also looking to bet Micro Manage or Adagio

It’ll be some Elliott/Mullins plot job of a horse we’ve never heard of.

Agree with QF that Mullins will probably win it with something but I have backed West Cork.

Skelton targets the race and I think this horse has a good chance, providing his brother does not decide to take five lengths out of the field at half way and then wonders why he has nothing left for the hill.

First Street of Henderson is my biggest handicap fancy of the week now. I think that 16-1 nrnb is a great price.

With the nrnb kicking in for Sea Ducor, my second choice is the already mentioned Micro Manage at 20-1, also nrnb

Surprised to see Petit Mouchoir missing, but at least I can start from scratch with no harm done.

Another race where the early shortlist would go off the page, but as long as it is, quick word for Anyharminasking, and also He’s A Hardy Bloke, who really caught my eye at a price in The Liffey Hurdle.

Back over hurdles though, I’m happy to have an early bet on my Morebattle fancy, Faivoir. The price looks big, and he’s a straight swap for Petit Mouchoir. Call Me Lyreen was interesting, but the more I think of him, the more I think he might be one to follow over fences in the next couple of years.

    Shortlist at present is:

Colnel Mustard – Decent place form in novices 16s
Party Central – won well at DRF but seemed to tied up at the line which is a worry 16s
Gua Du large – showed at great turn of foot at fairyhouse to win in November from the back, so this course shoudl suit. 25s
Jessie Evans – Placed in a galway hurdle and at punchestown festival before that, not sure what went wrong in the greatwood 25s

    @Kendicate

Colonel Mustard looks likely for Aintree over Cheltenham.

    Colonel Mustard NRNB @ 12/1

The UK handicapper has left him on his Irish mark somehow while raising almost everything else from Ireland. He looks absolutely chucked in already and depending on how things go earlier in the week i would not be surprised to see this go off half the price, maybe even more.

I’ve thereabouts with a few highly rated this week without yet landing a winner. Generally tight on the figures as might be expected for a two mile(ish) handicap hurdle at this time of year:

    162 Jesse Evans
    159 Broomfield Burg
    158 First Street
    158 West Cork
    157 Faivoir
    157 Cask Mate
    156 Felix Desjy

Top rated Jesse Evans was midfield here in November but has every chance on Galway Hurdle form. Has done well off a break and you wouldn’t think Noel Meade would come here without his charge being ready.

Broomfield Burg ran fair enough race at newbury before weakening in the closing stages. Has course form, lightly raced and generally progressive.

Of the two thrird rated I’d favour First Street, another comparatively lightly raced and progressive sort. His third at Newbury puts him right in the mix.

My ante post bet Echoes in Rain unfortunately ran in the Mares Hurdle. I got to give Stepney Causeway a chance a very big price. Skelton always seem to deliver in the County Hurdle and is capabel of bring a horse back to life. He has been running over fences the last months (some decent form behind Edwardstone as well), but now back to hurdling. In his last hurdle race he was a favourite running against Tritonic and I like to move it. With Jack Andrews claiming five he is on a very interesting mark.

I also like Broomfield Burg. His last race in the Betfair Hurdle wasn’t great, but his win before at Kempton was impressive and his second at Cheltenham dispite running very freely showed his ability as well. Might be suited by a strong pace.

    Stepney Causeway 80/1 EW
    Broomfield Burg 25/1 EW
