I still think I need one of those "Press" badges, though!
    It’s the overheads, you understand.

Oh yes – the ubiquitous Press badge.

There is more chance of winning the lottery than getting one of those Sean, unless you happen to cosy up to the right people or you work for a major news organisation, in which case you get one of the company badges.

If you think back to the old union restrictive practices of the 1960’s then you will be somewhere on the right track of how the badges are allocated.

    Restrictive practices, eh, Paul?

Sadly, that seems to be the norm for so many who enjoy "official power" over ordinary racegoers.

Getting into some tracks would make a man feel like some sort of unwelcome criminal, whereas footballers , sports-writers and ex-bookies seem to have carte blanche to go and do whatever they wish.

Oh well, perhaps I’d be as well joining the ol’ langars after all.

If I can get one, Paul, anyone can.

I want to go to Goodwood on this next bank holiday Monday. Richmond £29, Gordon £21. How does this rate? To me it seems bloody expensive. I like this course alot, it’s one of my favourites but looking about is it that over priced comared to some others?
The card is ok and it is family day but considering the prices of food etc is it and why is it that much more pricey than some other courses? or am I being picky?

Annual Sub to Raceform Interactive – £828
Third party data suplier – £550
    Timeform Annuals – £150
    Racing Post Online – £200
The odd book now and again – £75

Approx £1800 quid a year. Its enough I suppose but probably no more than you’d spend following your football team or playing golf and for betting every day I cant see how I could do it any cheaper.

I just buy the Racing Post every day and the odd book (Formcard & Mark Howard’s are the only two I can think of at the moment) but if it is something you enjoy I don’t think there is too much to be gained by breaking it down in monetary terms.

    Nothing apart from

    grudged

RP race replays at 20p a pop. Obviously there’s the betting itself but that dosen’t count, does it ? I’ve got the racing channels aswell but they don’t cost me anything.

It doesn’t cost me much yet. Whenever I am in England I buy the Racing Post and I send a friend in the UK 5 pounds each month to place bets. It is illegal here to place bets on line, so I do it this way.

My biggest racing expense is travel.

In 2008 my racing mileage was 20,844, on top of that around £750 on air fares and trains.

It cost double for the Yank–I spend my time and imagination to lower my expense.

Hats off to Debby for her creativity. :D

    .. I’ve been idling a bit this year, so it’s cost me about -£400 .. :o

I don’t subscribe to anything, I think it can impair your judgement or make you feel superior, either of which is a bad thing, imo.

I haven’t worked out my total point to point expenditure yet, but if you go racing by train and live in the south east then you can save a fortune by spending £20.00 per year on a Network South East Card. You get a third and more off off peak travel with no limit at weekends and Bank Holiday Mondays but a minimum of £10.oo Monday to Friday. Added to that you can get four adults on that same card and it covers East Anglia, The Home Counties and right over into the Wiltshire/Somerset Border.

The most I paid pointing last season was £17.00 travelling to and from Kingston Blount, Most I paid admission was £10.00 three times, the rest were a fiver. I did 12 meetings. Do the sums. Probably cost me around £200 in total without me grub which is extremely variable depending on hungry I am so I don’t bother to count that. £2.50 was the dearest racecard and that only once and I have no subs except Horse and Hound which does not count as it is all year round. All were good days out and value for money.
