Not taking 2/1 ante-post, but it’ll all aboard the Vauban express once he’s safely declared later on this morning.

Absolutely cannot have the Vauban beat off OR 101 in this.

OR 160 over hurdles, a number he merits IMO, 1m6f on the Flat is the ideal trip for a 2m hurdler and I’ve yet to hear of any good judge whose Flat/Jumps OR conversion is greater than 50, so he looks at least 9lb well in.

The trainer is a dab hand at winning these races with Jumpers and Ryan Moore will ensure he gets a ride.

Chuck in the fact his comments in running over timber are littered with “not fluent”s and there’s a case for saying Vauban is actually potentially even better on the Flat than his hurdles form suggests.

1m6f on the Flat is the ideal trip for a 2m hurdler

Is this a well known thing? Genuine question as i’m very much of the view that a stayer on the flat will develop in to a middle distance horse or a stayer over hurdles/jumps…

Now Vauban is still pretty unexposed over hurdles and it could be that he actually could go up in trip in that sphere as well. However for me, there’s no written rule. In saying that after Bring On The Night went close in the Ascot Stakes i had him marked down to be one to watch over further when back hurdling, but he missed the season….

Back to the race, Weston takes the ambitious 2m4 route instead….and Absurde is 6/1 now instead of the 9s available, Frankie booked won’t help….but i see him giving Vauban problems.

We could be missing the obvious here, the Irish don’t actually do great in the race

Vauban for me hasn’t learnt to settle properly at 2m so a flat race with a stronger pace would be good for him. Can’t have him stepping up until he can settle in the early stages of a race

    William Hill 9/4 btw

“Is this a well known thing?”

No, Jack, it’s just my opinion, though tbf I’ve taken upwards of 40 years to develop it.

When figuring out if a horse will get 2m over hurdles, I look at run style (front runner or hold up) and how far it stays in the Flat.

I’ve known 6f hold-up horses stay over hurdles and front-running milers not get home.

Generally I like a horse that stays 1m4f and settles to be sure.

And if it stays 1m6f-2m it could be a 2m4f hurdler and if it stays 2m2f plus it might get 3m.

All rule of thumb stuff and of course you get exceptions.

I just think Vauban gets 2m really well over hurdles and while he’s a 1m4f winner on the Flat when younger, I think 1m6f ought to be just about perfect for him.

9/4 Vauban with the William Hill organisation could prove massive in terms of the SP if the mad Gaelic Warrior (same connections) gamble down to 13/8 for the 4yo handicap hurdle at last year’s Cheltenham Festival is any guide.

Not much to choose between the top few on my figures here, but the complication is that I can’t rate either Vauban or Absurde. Given the jockey bookings you have to feel they would be right in the mix and I’m sure neither would be lacking fitness. Further complication is that all the reserves would have a live chance if getting a run.

    114 Charging Thunder
    113 Point King
    111 Sam Cooke
    111 Scriptwriter
111 Tides Of War (Res 3)
    110 Stay Well (Res 1)
    110 Prydwen (Res 2)
    109 Raymond Tusk

Not a race I’d be falling over myself to get involved in. However, if forced to go for anything I’d go for Sam Cooke who put up a fine performance first time which looked a career best, and that’s where you need horses to be for Royal Ascot.

I remember at the start of the season Ed Bethell was talking up Chillingham as one with the potential to win an Ebor. He won nice and easy on his comeback and he’s been freshened up since. This will be a real test of his credentials, he has to run a big race if those words are going to ring true.
I’m a bit annoyed I missed out on a bigger price, he has been well backed.
12/1 main bet with a smidgen on Point King and Postileo.

I keep being told Ruling Dynasty is Group class which has to be a slight concern – reverse forecast saver might be in order.
