I don’t think Henderson is against travelling horses , he sent Forgotten Voice to Australia 10 years back and he went ok . I just think he don’t want to take on Irish at home pre Cheltenham as he knows they do have much better horses in general. Ive seen two interviews after Jonbon has won this year and both times he suggested Mullins stay in Ireland and he will stay in UK with Jonbon and meet at Cheltenham. Mullins seems to have rejected the carve up and is looking at sending El Fabiola to Ascot , that means Jonbon won’t be there but dodging him by going to Newbury .

Henderson saying he was never going to run Constituion Hill at Sandown and it was Buckley that said “let’s see”

I look forward to the Buckley slating thread…😂

I had a quick vox-pop of a few buddies last night; all enjoy sports and like a bet. None even recognised the name of Constitution Hill or Galopin des Champs. Probably the main reason is that Premiership has become an all-devouring monster, but racing is it’s own worst enemy, when the best horses only race a few times each year

Tbf, I doubt many outside racing would have heard of Night Nurse or Monksfield back in the day.

On the Flat most have heard of Shergar – and not because he was a well above average Derby winner – and over Jumps Red Rum.

But that’s ok because I couldn’t tell you the leading scorer in the Premier League this season – though I’d hazard a guess it’s that sunbed-dodging North European at Man City.

It’s ok to not be….aware of others’ stuff or have others be aware of your stuff.

Everyone in Ireland would have known Monksfield, most would have known istabraq or Kauto Star

“Everyone” is a bold statement, even regarding a relatively small country.

I’d accept awareness would have been greater in a country where racing is so important it’s treated as an industry, not a sport, by government, but I suspect “everyone” probably overstates it.

Anyway, Monksfield, Istabraq and Kauto Star – to the best of my knowledge – never played football so, in the UK, the answer in most cases would be: “who?”

    Accepted; ‘everyone’ is an exaggeration.
But the general point remains; racing is not engineering the best horses racing against each other more often. The clash of the KG and the Savills is another obvious own goal

    There I completely agree.

There are too many Pattern events.

Back in the day, there was no Lancashire Chase at Haydock Park and I can’t remember a Savills or equivalent of it (Alan may remember better than I).

Consequently the Hennessy routinely attracted horses of Cheltenham Gold Cup standard and the cream of the UK, Ireland and even France would be Kempton Park-bound for the King George.

You even got top-class 2m chasers like Analog’s Daughter having a crack.

Now they can all dodge each other and win tiny-field Pattern events in cold blood.

The Savills started life as the Black & White Whiskey Gold Cup, over two and a half miles. David Nicholson’s grand chaser Very Promising won the inaugural running.

Good horse Very Promising , as a comparison he ran 3rd in the 87 B and W Gold Cup his last season on track , that was his 4 th run of campaign and had 7 races overall , won a few and ran well in Champion Chase that season . How many top liners now get to December and are having 4 th run in .

Originally with the Rimells IIRC, I saw Very Promising bolt up in a Warwick Novices’ Hurdle and he won the Panama Cigar Hurdle Final at Chepstow the following spring.

Had a quick google of Very Promising , lived out his days at Jackdaws , died aged 22 . 44 runs , unplaced only 5 times . buried next to an old favorite of mine Waterloo Boy .

Watching Ascot on SSR this afternoon, it was amusing to be reminded that Might I – 3rd out of 4 in the novice chase today – was once sent off 6/4 favourite in a novice hurdle at Sandown but finished second to a newcomer from the Nicky Henderson stable: Constitution Hill at 85/40 second favourite.

My favourite story of that type was about the beautifully-simply named Salisbury Stakes at Salisbury over 5f for 2yo in May 1970.

Fireside Chat, ridden by Lester Piggott, was the 2/9 favourite.

Fireside Chat was beaten four lengths by a newcomer called Mill Reef.

Arkle’s first race was a third place finish, beaten 9 lengths. The first and second have been forgotten

Istabraq finished 2nd at 6-4 first time out over hurdles behind Noble Thyne.
