Your point about when the bet on a single Champion Hurdle victory would pay out is an interesting one RTB.

Even if it was announced that Constitution Hill had been retired with only one Champion Hurdle win under his belt, would that be sufficient to trigger payment? Sometimes horses are brought out of retirement.

At what age would another victory be judged to be impossible? Mac Vidi was runner-up in the Gold Cup aged 15!

At 1,200% interest if it wins, any time in the next 50 years beats the current bank rate, Marlingford.

Not sure I’d want to be waiting on a bet at 4/5, though.

Agree Ian, but most people would still prefer to be paid sooner rather than later. There’s definitely some wriggle room on this latter point!

The bet should be at what point in the future does Henderson say actually CH does need a trip and puts him up alla Shiskin , keeping CH over hurdles keeps these two apart for now ….

William Hill up until now have always been the shortest on Constitution Hill to win the 2024 Champion Hurdle
When I was chipping away with everyone else at 7/4 after Cheltenham, 11/8, 1/1 and 8/11 William Hill were 4/7 so they didn’t want to take any money on him.
If he does get turned over Hills will be scratching their heads…

Thank you for dragging it out for all that time Nicky and holding the price up for as long as you did
He gets stick when he says one thing and does another but he played a blinder with this fence stuff

Might only see him 3 times this year; Kempton, Cheltenham, maybe Punchestown.

Times really change , first time I ever went racing was this meeting in 83 so I always take a good look at this meeting and remember back . Desert Orchid was beaten by a horse called Catch Phrase in the Winter Novices Hurdle . Desert Orchid ended up running 70 times , carried big weights at times , Constitution Hill has raced 7 times in two years , times have changed a lot .

Times certainly have changed – and not for the better.

I groaned earlier this week when Elliot said Teahupoo will probably not run again until Cheltenham. I suppose that is partly a consequence of the festival being more prestigious and valuable than it was in previous eras – but I also believe it is because the horses are now weaker. A point touched upon by Lydia Hislop and Ruby Walsh in last week’s “Road To Cheltenham”.

Why are so many horses now only able to withstand 3 or 4 races a season? Even just 17 years ago, Kauto Star ran 5 times before he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup – and one of those starts was in the Tingle Creek.

Trainers and owners are in a weird position

How many pundits/punters will say they want horses to run more and then say Nicholls over ran Bravemansgame when he gets beat in the King George

10 horse race at the Cheltenham festival

    all equally rated
each horse only runs once beforehand
each trainer tells the public that their horse is geared around Cheltenham

    means nothing

    only one winner
    9 losers

If Bravemansgame is beaten in the King George it wilk be because he is not good enough. The form of last season’s Gold Cup has taken quite a lot of knocks.

Monksfield ran 49 times over hurdles; good ground, heavy ground, handicaps (inevitably top weight), conditions races. Only won 14 of of those, but still regarded as one of the greatest hurdlers ever.
Are connections now too afraid to lose?
