As some other posters have said, I have mixed feelings about the decision but I can understand why connections have taken it. Such a pity his jumps career has ended with a whimper.
I hope he is not hyped up by the media ahead of a Flat campaign but I know that is a vain hope. While he was visually impressive at Southwell, he didn’t achieve anything extraordinary on the book. Talk of him winning races like the Irish St Leger and Melbourne Cup is premature.
February 25, 2026 at 17:47 #1756318People want to see him as proven at Southwell , if racing is smart they’ll maximise his popularity , in Ginger McCain’s book he talked about taking Rummy to Ireland for a show ( 3 or 4 years after he retired ) as he drove into the town the road was blocked up , he asked a policeman what had happened and the copper laughed and said there all here to see Rummy , he had a horsebox full of merch and he sold the lot … certain horses and people are bigger than racing itself , I put Cecil at the top of that list

February 25, 2026 at 17:49 #1756319“On another note I read/hear he was drifting like a barge before it was officially announced. This bookmaker sponsoring yards malarky is a massive problem for the game. The sport relies on them too much and for me there is a slight integrity issue that stems from that relationship.”
More than a slight issue. Bookmaker sponsorship of training yards should not be permitted.
February 25, 2026 at 17:51 #1756320Ian Davies must be celebrating his 12/1 about Constitution Hill only winning one Champion Hurdle.
I am not going to, of course. That would be vulgar.
February 25, 2026 at 17:55 #1756321He’ll collect with tears in his eyes

Incredible the legacy he left us with…..

Go for it. There’s a lot to like about that horse. Looks a chaser. Reminds me a bit of Sprinter Sacre.
February 25, 2026 at 18:26 #1756348Lol I’ll wait to the Tues , he has looked very good so far , Henderson does seem to get his share of stars , if there is to be a new star I reckon he’s the likely horse

I hope Mr Davies is well, assuming he is still reading this thread (I bet he is).
Looking back at the start of this saga, I notice a few posts by The Tatling Cheekily. I hope he is doing OK too.
February 25, 2026 at 19:12 #1756362It’s funny reading this thread back in March 2023 the expectations and understandably were the sky’s the limit, nearly three years later he hacks up in an AW novice at Southwell. Funny old world.
The more I know the less I understand.
February 25, 2026 at 19:13 #1756363It is indeed sad that Constitution Hill’s Jumps career has ended (hopefully for good, though who knows with Henderson). However, seeing him land on his head three times in the past year was much sadder, and a fourth time could have easily become a tragedy.
I don’t have any particular expectations for his Flat career, but am glad this star racehorse remains in training, and am looking forward to seeing how he gets on.
February 25, 2026 at 19:16 #1756365I wonder if the BHA did have a quiet word with the trainer & owner? I have a feeling they did.
February 25, 2026 at 19:24 #1756366Even if they did speak to them they couldnt force them not to run , honestly I think they know the risk to large plus the owner seems excited by the new flat chapter

February 25, 2026 at 19:28 #1756367I suspect so too Astralcharmer, though we are unlikely to ever know.
February 25, 2026 at 19:51 #1756371Listening to Michael Buckley on the Nick Luck Daily made me feel outside influences had also played a part in the decision. He did make reference to Brough Scott on Luck on Sunday and that he had been getting a number of emails.
The damage to NH racing had it gone horribly wrong was clearly a major factor in the final decision.
February 25, 2026 at 21:21 #1756378I am relieved , more than anything.
I don’t think that I could have watched the Champion Hurdle if he had run.
We all know the risks of the game , and it is sad when anything bad happens to any horse.
However , there are too mnay warning signs here , not just his high profile , but the repeat falls , and all at a higher speed than other hurdlers achieve.
He owes nobody anything.
I also know that it is anathema to many , but Henderson obviously cares for his charges , along with being a great trainer.
I commend Mr Buckley , likewise. - AuthorPosts
