If you go to Australia or start targeting staying races, you might consider having a Flat trainer who does very well with older horses especially around the globe. William Haggas would fit that bill and I think he was also mentioned in the RP a few days ago.
Though I doubt that Buckley would move the horse from Nicky. Their focus is too much on Tuesday the 10th of March.February 24, 2026 at 22:16 #1756165“Ruby even Hughsie knows Garlic is going on the Thursday”
Potentially… it boils down to if they believe Fact to File gets the trip or not in the Gold Cup. Hes a Ryanair banker
Gaelic Warrior wins the Gold Cup this year.. or next year or both, its up to Mullins… Townend getting sentimental and riding GDC would only go and make Gaelic Warrior a better chance next year as Jukebox, Jango etc won’t return the same horse next year after this years gruller
Mullins won’t be saying anything… if FTF gets supplemented for the GC then that will be the answerGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
February 24, 2026 at 22:27 #1756166also although its still a long way off in terms of Mullins bingo the current exchange prices of the two in the Ryanair and Gold Cup without the NRNB market tell a story

February 24, 2026 at 22:28 #1756167Personally, I would be looking at heading to Newbury for the G3 John Porter Stakes in mid April and then onto York for the G2 Yorkshire Cup in mid May. Obviously if he shows he is capable of winning at that grade then you can try fishing in deeper waters.
You could then either give him a break to avoid the summer months or head to France (for the G1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud in early July) and then target either the G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin (early August) or the Ebor in mid August, then take in the Irish St Leger in mid September and the Champions Long Distance Cup on Champions Day in mid October (which due to quarantine processes would likely rule him out of a tilt at the Melbourne Cup).
Alternatively you could always miss Ascot and try Australia or even go for the G1 French St Leger in late October – there are so many options available to him on the flat, some are more winnable than others of course but I do think he is capable of mixing it in that grade if given the chance.

February 24, 2026 at 22:44 #1756170LD, the weakest of the German G1 races is the Grosser Preis von Bayern run during the 1st or 2nd November week. Bottomless ground, not many real G1 horses in it and a few of them already over the top.
The John Porter as a first target should suit and he might get some cut in the ground. The Ormonde Stakes don’t appeal to me that much, because I wouldn’t be too confident about him handling the track at Chester. After the Newbury race they’ll be much wiser and go on from then. But, already talking Melbourne Cup is just too premature and rather unrealistic….
February 24, 2026 at 23:08 #1756171Townsend isn’t being sentimental , he knows Galopin is his best GC chance , the stable have never really known what Gaelic is , oh he’s a 2 miler , hang on he’s not , that last run really questions if he’s a 3 mile plus horse , it’s likely he’s somewhere in the middle and without FTF its a very winnable Ryanair , not that ill play him at evens
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
February 24, 2026 at 23:09 #1756172I’d be surprised if he did not show up for the Champion Hurdle or they would have drawn a line under it by now.
He has won eight Grade 1 races and has not run outside that Class of race for five years so I really can’t see them wanting to compete in mundane Listed and Group 3 races. The more I know the less I understand.
February 24, 2026 at 23:14 #1756174There’s absolutely no reason for the BHA failing to get involved. They have all kinds of other rules for preventing horses running, some of them unnecessary in my view. They needn’t even make a big display of it, a quiet word of warning first so Henderson and Buckley could bow out gracefully would hopefully be sufficient.
I’m not generally a fan of having rules that prevent horses from running, and am usually supportive of connections making their own decisions. But all sense has gone out the window here, and there is a significant wider risk to the sport. It is all so frustrating when the situation is entirely avoidable.
February 24, 2026 at 23:19 #1756175HDLG I was the first person on this forum to say GDC would win a Gold Cup.. Everyone else said he was too free and wouldn’t get the distance. GDC didn’t win it last year. He’s regressed. Where is he in the betting market, he’s behind the other two and one of those will be in the Ryanair.. I’m thinking its Fact to File as JP knows he won’t stay and the Ryanair is his distance. Gaelic Warrior was ridiculed after the Fred Winter, was told he’s not a Cheltenham horse, he jumps right, he doesn’t settle, is going Ryanair yet is higher up on the betting market than GDC… Go figure

February 25, 2026 at 03:58 #1756181RTB – winning G1’s over hurdles is a whole different kettle of fish to G1’s on the flat, this season’s G1 Fighting Fith was worth £69k to the winner, whilst last season’s G3 John Porter was worth £48k to the winner and last season’s G2 Yorkshire Cup was worth £108k to the winner.
Those races are perfect stepping stones to see where he actually stacks up against graded flat horses and should he win those races then connections would be looking at G1 races as the next logical step.
Ruby – forgot to add the Grosser Preis von Bayern to the list, last year’s winner was George Scott’s 3 yr old Bay City Roller (his first win since the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster as a 2yr old) but the prize money for winning that was £82k, he was officially rated 117 and before that he was getting beat in G2/3 races.
The Willie Mullins trained Absurde is an 8 yr old who mixes hurdling and flat races and is officially rated 107 (as high as 110) and he won the Ebor in 2023 (in the low 100s) and was 7th, 5th and 8th in the 2023, 2024 and 2025 Melbourne Cups along with finishing 3rd in last season’s Irish St Leger.
The 6yr old Ethical Diamond also won the Ebor off the low 100s and is now at 121 following his BC Turf win and we can easily say that CH was a much better hurdler than both of them and he is just as unexposed as both of them were when they started out on the flat – yes he is older but he has far less career starts than Absurde has and the same exact number of career starts as Ethical Diamond has.
At this point we simply don’t know where CH flat ceiling could end up at until they test him. His total career earning over hurdles sits at just over £900k, Absurde and Ethical Diamond both took home a £300k for winning the Ebor! CH won £253k for his Champion Hurdle which is almost £25k less than what you earn for finishing 3rd in last season’s Melbourne Cup……hell Absurde won £79k for finishing 8th!
Not only is the flat option the far less riskier option for the horse it is also potentially the most lucrative………..again a no brainer of a decision for me. At this point, is it really bad of me to hope that the schooling doesn’t go well enough to convince them that Cheltenham is the route to go?
February 25, 2026 at 05:24 #1756182Yet Hughsie Galopin is going to be ridden by the stable no1, we are all saying FTF won’t stay yet he out stayed Gaelic last time , that’s why Gaelic is going to the a Ryanair , Galopin e.w at 7s or the hill at 7/4 prob smaller if conf , I know which one makes most sense

February 25, 2026 at 08:20 #1756188That was kind of my point LD that he isn’t up to Group 1 here, well we think he isn’t so would they really want to target the lower levels.
The more I know the less I understand.
February 25, 2026 at 08:36 #1756190FTF is around 6/4 and 13/8 on the exchange for the Ryanair

February 25, 2026 at 09:43 #1756198I’m coming round to the idea that The Hill should probably be aimed at the John Porter rather than the Ormonde (how great it would be though to see him on the Roodee and the buzz around that up in the North West).
I keep looking at Hamish as a role model of what can be achieved and he won both the John Porter & Ormonde.
O’Brien tends to target the Ormonde having won it 7 times now. He doesn’t take much interest in the John Porter.
Last season’s John Porter was won by a filly with an official rating of 100 who was subsequently easily beaten in 2 races including the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket. You would hope The Hill is better than that.
