If consistency beats ability then the best horse can run to its best and yet be beaten by a horse who’s always had the better form.
Value Is EverythingMarch 13, 2025 at 15:55 #1723537Night Nurse and Monksfield I think are rated pretty much correctly based on their Aintree dead heat where Night Nurse was conceeding weight to Monksfield but Istabraq is highly overrated in my opinion.
Sea Pigeon’s rating is actually laughable when you consider he is on the same mark as Baracouda and Gaye Brief and somehow is rated 2lbs inferior to Limestone Lad!
Arkle and Flyingbolt’s ratings are most likely due to the insane weight carrying performances they produced (you could argue that Flyingbolt’s were even greater than Arkle’s if you look at their Irish National wins especially) and because it is now extremely rare for the top horses to run in handicap races (a big deal is made when the 7lbs mare’s allowance comes into play) and now I highly doubt any of them would ever find themselves in the circumstances needed to record even a rating of 200 let alone above that.
That being said it would be nice to someone from Timeform come out and explain exactly how some of the aforementioned ratings were actually achieved…..just out of idle curiosity.
March 22, 2025 at 16:15 #1724620May be going to Aintree, apparently.
Not only tremendously disappointing from a competition standpoint, as well as for all the Irish racing fans who wanted to see him in action at Punchestown, but also the wrong decision for the horse in my opinion. The only time he has ever looked like being beaten was in the Aintree Hurdle two years ago, when he ran miles below his best two-mile form.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if something outstayed him at Aintree; pity that Brighterdaysahead won’t be there, as I would fancy her strongly against him over two and a half miles.
March 22, 2025 at 16:55 #1724623An absolute disgrace if this horse isn’t brought to Punchestown for the State Man clash.
If they go to Aintree, I hope Lossiemouth turns up but ideally, the public deserve to see all 3 face off in Ireland.March 22, 2025 at 17:00 #1724624I’ve just had a look at the dates and there’s a 1 month gap between the Aintree Hurdle and Punchestown Champion Hurdle this season.
Constitution Hill should be running in both.
March 22, 2025 at 17:16 #1724625I think this is down to the owner, Henderson seemed keen on going to Ireland but said the owner would have the final say.
The more I know the less I understand.
March 22, 2025 at 18:11 #1724626Istabraq lost at Aintree in April. And to a Pipe horse which at the time pained me more.
March 22, 2025 at 18:50 #1724628The safe option taken again. And still some people wonder why other people find Henderson so exasperating…
March 22, 2025 at 19:05 #1724630“The safe option taken again.”
I hope Lossiemouth runs here.
According to Henderson , Consitution Hill might go to both. I’d be surprised if he does, unless he hacks up at Aintree against a small handful of no hopers. If he gets put to the pin of his collar by something, even if he wins, I think he would skip Punchestown.
March 22, 2025 at 21:04 #1724639A return to the race where (following on from his Champion Hurdle stroll in 2023) he produced his least impressive performance of his career in a laboured 3L defeat of Sharjah instead of heading for a rematch against rivals you were pretty certain he would put away comfortably in the Champion Hurdle a mere few weeks ago??????
Willie, please please please send Lossiemouth to Aintree before Punchestown….I know Aintree is pretty soon after Cheltenham but its not like she expended a lot of effort to win the Mares race and you surely have another horse that you can send with her to make the running and make it a true test at 2m4f, which I am sure was the main reason for CH’s average performance in 2023.
Remember all that serious talk about CH likely being aimed at trying to emmulate Dawn Run (Champion Hurdle/Gold Cup double) which sank pretty much without a trace immediately following the aftermath of that Aintree performance…..and this is the exact same race that you think will be more suitable for him, even with most evidence pointing to the fact that he is not that same imperious horse he was two years ago
March 23, 2025 at 08:44 #1724659Why don’t we go the whole hog , let’s have a grade 1 , say end Jan at Kempton or Sandown so he doesn’t have to travel to far , keep the date flexible so Nicky gets the perfect ground , only horses called Constitution Hill can enter , all the race goers have to sign a contract agreeing not to make a sound , instead of hurdles we can papermache fake hurdles just in case he clips one ….. Honestly I’m at the point now where I want him beat so Nicky can stop this **** show …. Fecking run him at both you coward
March 23, 2025 at 09:15 #1724662Very good idea HDLG , id go sign a noise abatement order no probs .
However had a few kids and with those comes the dreaded school project , the go to is papermache models of things , ive noticed some papermache can be slightly rough when dried , would there be regulation on how papermache jumps would be constructed , id say Hendo would have to check the construction parameters first , id say they will need to be moist on raceday .March 23, 2025 at 09:24 #1724663“Honestly I’m at the point now where I want him beat”.
Same here, HDLG. Not so much because of the horse but due to Henderson and Buckley. The latter in particular talked him up but has been content for him to be campaigned negatively ever since.
I am tired of all the soap opera surrounding a horse which has won one Champion Hurdle while being wrapped in cotton wool for his entire career.
March 23, 2025 at 10:48 #1724672Ok tissue paper hurdles, moist if required , yeah CAS , I mentioned it last week I really believe it’s time for Henderson to retire , his bottle has gone
March 23, 2025 at 12:49 #1724676I think it has been gone for some time now. Since the Altior debacle at Ascot.
March 23, 2025 at 14:38 #1724688His bottle just isn’t the same without the Cork(y).
March 23, 2025 at 14:46 #1724689Surely Nico must be in his ear saying to run him in both
