Can anyone see Aidan O’Brien training over jumps again? It was a real shame he turned his back on jump racing after the retirement of Istabraq. Does anyone know why Aidan O’Brien packed in the jumps after 2002? Imagine what might of been had he remained training in NH racing. How many winners would he have trained at the Cheltenham Festival after 2002? Would he have trained a winner of the Gold Cup by now? Would he have trained a Grand National winner?
Perhaps JP McManus would try to get the ball rolling agian and try luring O’Brien back to training in real racing again especially if Jonjo O’Neill disapoints in the future and JP is looking for a replacement for Jonjo. Imagine what a JP McManus, Aidan O’Brien, Tony McCoy parnetship would do. I am sure Paul Nicholls would have a few sleepless nights if that where ever become reality. Which I hope is does of course.
October 21, 2007 at 18:59 #120814Istabraq was originally bought to be trained by John Durkan, but sadly he got cancer and the horse was sent to Aiden, and the rest is history, his sister in law is Frances Crowley who took majority of his jumpers, has he was given a offer by Tabor, Coolmoore etc that would have been silly if he refused.
It would have been interesting, but I doubt we would have seen the likes of George etc doing well as they have

Good first paragraph there!
October 21, 2007 at 19:39 #120822Someone stated on another board that anyone could be champion trainer given the quality of the horses that he has to work with – so I looked him up on Wikipedia and the man is a genius ….you do wonder what he would have achieved had he continued with nh. He was always prepared to return Istabraq to John Durkin if and when he recovered from his illness. I’ve found the sheer weight of numbers of the Ballydoyle horses a bit irritating this season, but I can take nothing away from O’Brien as a trainer.
August 14, 2008 at 13:59 #8634Reports in the sporting life that O’Brien is going to train Hebridean for a winter campaign over hurdles..
It would be interesting to see him with a few in training over the jumps.
August 14, 2008 at 15:18 #177004He did have minor successes with Istabraq……!

August 14, 2008 at 15:56 #177010Should really have said “interesting if he had a few back in training over jumps”
I’m just about old enough to remember that istabraq fella
August 14, 2008 at 16:30 #177011He’s by Bach so it makes sense. Would give that particular Coolmore sire a major boost if he does the business over obstacles.
August 14, 2008 at 17:30 #177016Another slap in the chops for Jonjo as well really….
Cue fist of fury
August 14, 2008 at 19:07 #177024I read the newspaper article in today’s daily mail newspaper and if it were to be true this will be excellent news. If Aidan O’Brien were to Hebridean in next years Triumph Hurdle it will set up a intriguing clash with Paul Nicholls. Lets hope we see a top quality 3 year old horse go to Ditcheat and challenge Aidan O’Brien. I am already looking forward to seeing O’Brien v Nicholls at Cheltenham.
PS – Any chance we see Honolulu go hurdling as well?

Whilst I can’t argue that Paul Nicholls is the top NH trainer, surely Alan King dominates hurdling… if AO’B is going to have a Triumph hopeful it’ll be Alan he’ll be competing with.
August 14, 2008 at 23:07 #177043what news on Black Jacari Katchit? and is it correct that Katchit is going to have a run on the flat?
August 14, 2008 at 23:42 #177045Aidan has quite a few Montjues in training who are just below group level who would make excellent NH horses.Hebridean I believe he owned at one time and is bred by his wife.McManus has horses all over the place and Aidan trained for him before Jonjo took over Jackdaw.
August 15, 2008 at 00:31 #177046Wonder if Jim Bolger will accidentally enter New Approach in the Champion Hurdle?

Had AP done so this year he would have had to beat Paul Nicholls!
August 15, 2008 at 11:19 #177063Katchit makes a good point, King does seem to have the edge with hurdlers.
Nicholls is undisputably the best with chasers.
August 15, 2008 at 14:14 #177080heard a lot of talk about alan kings hurdlers over the summer (so far lol), but little of paul nicholls!
they have GB vs Rest Of The World, so why not Flat v Jumps!?!
