Just how poor are his horses running and secondly why as he not shut up shop. Something is clearly wrong with them.

3 seconds
9 unplaced (6 of these were double figures odds)From last 14 runners.
What’s wrong with that and why would you shut the yard down?
December 28, 2020 at 19:37 #1515688Last 14 days running at 7% success rate. For a top yard with the quality of horses he has, that is poor. Hence why there is probably a problem and maybe like Henderson admit it and try and find the problem. Henderson is 23% success rate in last 14 days but after tomorrow is having no runners for several days to try and find why some of his horses have ran below par. Tizzard should maybe do the same.
December 29, 2020 at 07:45 #1515738Tizzard has never been a high strike rate trainer. Over the last 5 years (60 months) he has only had a strike rate of 20%+ on a calendar month 3 times in the jumps season months (October-April). The only times you generally tend to see this trainer with a high strike rate is outside of the traditional jumps season when he is taking on the summer jumpers. Distinctly average trainer who has trained some excellent horses in recent years. Has won some top races with good horses yet I would be certain that if say Paul Nicholls had of had some of Tizzards star horses then he would have got far more out of them though that’s merely my theory and cannot be proven either way.
December 29, 2020 at 10:37 #1515750Look beyond the statistics and not difficult to see reasons why the Tizzard stable isn’t at the same level as previous seasons.
First, the lack of quality new horses, stemming from the fact that my namesake is no longer around to send them a dozen potential novice hurdlers each year, and that his other owners lack the financial firepower to compete at the sales. So the strike rate in novice hurdles is back to where it was ten years ago.
Second the tragic death of his daughter in May, who had a similar role in the stable to that of Corky Browne at Hendersons. The upset to the family is obvious, the upset to the stable routine less so, but I’ve seen other examples of the loss of a key individual from a stable producing a decline in results. Think Man United/Ferguson or Arsenal/Wenger.
December 29, 2020 at 10:50 #1515755I recall reading that Tizzard is now training for the Souede/Munir team. They must have the firepower to compete at the sales. Although I cannot think of any horse trained by Tizzard that has run for them yet.
December 29, 2020 at 11:26 #1515757You could be right about Kim ap. I remember reading an interview with Tizzard a few years ago and he said she was the brains of the operation.
December 29, 2020 at 11:42 #1515758Munir/Souede have two horses with Colin Tizzard – Fulgurix and Road Senam. Both rather moderate novices that couldn’t win in France.
They don’t buy at the sales, at least not the sales here or in Ireland. Almost all of theirs that race in the UK are sourced from France, often having raced there for Munir after being bought privately.

Wenger was a big part of the decline

December 29, 2020 at 13:20 #1515771Sad to hear about the death of his daughter, I wasn’t aware of that.
droffats he has only the one runner today Rockpoint at Newbury. If I fancied it then I wouldn’t be put off backing it by stable form in anyway.
December 29, 2020 at 20:02 #1515825I’ve been saying this for some time now. Distinctly average trainer who gets far more plaudits than he probably warrants despite his exploits with his 3 big horses. Also agreed on the Paul Nicholls point.
Definitely think losing his daughter has been a tremendous personal loss to him and also his yard. Would not be at all surprised to see Joe take over before the end of the season.
December 30, 2020 at 01:08 #1515836Hope things turn around for him soon.
Nobody wants to outlive their children and she was the beating heart of their operation…a much loved mum and daughter. He has trained some of the Nations favourite horses I’d like to thank him for that and wish for better times ahead.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...December 31, 2020 at 16:50 #1515924Some awfully harsh comments here, recency bias at its worst – Tizzard has some of the marks of a top trainer in my book. Many of his best horses have also been Nicholls-esque in their longevity: Hey Big Spender, Cue Card, Theatre Guide, Native River.
He has even arguably done quite a good job with some of the more injury-prone ones like Thistlecrack, Native River, Fox Norton and Robinsfirth too: all back at a high level at least once after major setbacks.
I agree with some of the comments about Kim Gingell and suspect her death has left a massive hole in the day-to-day business. His horses have been disappointing this season and everything has felt awry – horses jumping poorly, some odd race tactics, strange race planning, Robbie Power arguably riding well below par…
Hopefully they get back on the right track soon although you wonder if it might take a while. They’re a family operation so I expect they’d try to plug the gaps from within rather than taking on someone with years of experience elsewhere.
December 31, 2020 at 19:07 #1515937I don’t think there is anything in the yard , remember he also lost a good novice chaser at the start of the season , to be honest I think both Hobbs and twiston Davies have had quieter seasons , I do think he needs a better festival , saying that unless they can nurse LIT back I think they,ll struggle in anything but the hcaps

January 2, 2021 at 09:06 #1516095I focus on Trainers and their hurdlers, I look for reliability when favourites. Tizzard didn’t make the initial list of those I have followed this season from October but he is in good company. I have eliminated Henderson, JonJo, Olly Murphy, Fergal O Brien, Mullholland and others. I accept that those abandoned may have fared a little better over jumps. Going into 2021 I have a core of six trainers that I will be backing with some confidence and a further four or five who could improve. Losing runs of 5 or 6 when favourites from any stable are unacceptable. It’s a simple method but it works.
January 2, 2021 at 09:51 #1516100Woolf who are the 6 you will be following ….nicholls , Skelton , fry …..lol I’m struggling after that
