While I find it hard to question the judgement of a trainer as successful as Paul Cole who already has a Derby win to his credit, so he knows what it takex, I find it puzzling that he has entered River Proud.
Having a vested interest in River Proud’s sire, Proud Citizen, I hope I am proved wrong, but it appears this horse has zero chance of lasting the 12f Derby trip. Cole is quoted as saying that " he believes that his sire was second over a mile and a half" which is wrong—the only time Proud Citizen tried 12f was when he finished a tired and fading fifth and was vanned off after the Belmont Stakes. Maybe Cole was referring to Proud Citizen’s game second place finish in the Kentucky Derby. However, this is over 10f and was over a speed favoring track and Proud Citizen chased the wire-to-wire winner War Emblem around the track. Cole is correct though in saying that River Proud’s grand-sire Gone West suggests speed and Proud Citizen’s damsire is the sprinter Green Forest.
River Proud’s female side does’nt offer much hope as his dam is by River Special who lasted 1 1/16th mile in US but is by Riverman who was clearly best over a mile, and his second dam is by the sprinter and speed influence Welsh Saint. The latter, while being by St. Paddy, received his speed from his damsire being the fast Abernant.
Furthur it seemed that River Proud was better suited to 6f last year suggesting that he would be best at a mile this– and plus he’ll have to deal with soft ground at Epsom.
I have great respect for Cole and hope I’m wrong.
June 4, 2008 at 16:15 #166396Welcome to the forum Tim.
I’m not sure if you have seen his run in the french guineas but I think he is drawing (What I believe is) vain hope that as he was staying on well over a mile he should stay further. This is erroneous in my opinion as the horse just had to wait for the breaks and showed speed as opposed to staying power.
Can’t stay, won’t stay!!!
June 5, 2008 at 06:23 #166473He could have easily taken the Excellent Art route, who was also a good thing beaten in the Poulains last year because saluting at Royal Ascot.
June 5, 2008 at 11:36 #166528An almost identical performance in the poulains Myles… I agree he should be going to the St James but the owners are obviously keen to have a go.
June 6, 2008 at 10:34 #166729You might want to look at who owns River Proud – 75k to Mr Spencer is like 50p to you and I. Let him take his chance, he was finishing like a train in the French Guineas and was very very unlucky in running and not to win the race. He´d have had my cash in the St. James Palace and i´ll back him tomorrow too.
June 6, 2008 at 12:08 #166760Looking a doubtful runner having picked up a little knock.
June 6, 2008 at 12:11 #166763Unfortunate for connections – Would they get a refund?
June 6, 2008 at 12:16 #166766It is a "slight pulled muscle"
Oliver Cole ha said "It is still a possibility that he might line up tomorrow and we will make a decision later today."
Althouigh I have heard a final decision may not be made until tomorrow.
