I’m baffled as to why Cockney Rebel hasn’t been entered for the Sussex Stakes (BBC Ceefax 7/6/07).
What else is there for him between the St. James’ Palace and the QEII in late September???? Ok, I know there is the Jacques le Marois, but why go abroad when the ideal race is at home? And even if they are leaning towards Deauville, surely at least an entry at Goodwood was in order??

June 8, 2007 at 10:05 #63982The plan for the Cockney has been mapped out since the beginning of the season and will culminate with a trip to Monmouth Park in late October. All other things being equal, of course. It’s a clever one too, avoiding older horses for as long as possible. And don’t forget the horse will have had three top grade runs in the space of eight weeks. He will benefit from a break.

It would have made sense, IMO.
His possible races in the summer (after Ascot but before the QE2) would have been:
Prix Jean Prat – 8th July
Sussex – 1st July
J Le Marios – 12th Aug
Prix du Moulin – 9th Sept
(assuming they don’t try him at 10f)

June 8, 2007 at 15:13 #63985Sussex is 1st August isn’t it?

Oops!
Prix Jean Prat – 8th July
Sussex – 1st Aug
J Le Marios – 12th Aug
Prix du Moulin – 9th Sept
(at least I got them in the right order)

June 8, 2007 at 21:02 #63987I’d like to see him try 10 furlongs. If he was mine he’d be lining up in the Eclipse.
June 9, 2007 at 10:33 #63988I disagree. There is no point in trying him over ten furlongs (a trip I’d be quite doubtful of him staying given the speed he showed when coming from last to first to win our Guineas) when the Sussex or the Marois, both ideally spaced between the two Ascot Group 1’s I mentioned earlier, would appear to be penalty kicks. There are no older milers to be worried about!
June 9, 2007 at 10:48 #63989Agreed WW. It is the route to go for to maximise his value/reputation. However, I would personally like to see him try 10F to see what happened. If he did stay then the options for him would be increased and, given the way he battled on in Ireland after struggliong to settle early and running free, I wouldn’t be convinced he wouldn’t stay.
All that said I’m looking forward to seeing him again, whatever the distance.

Won’t GW be kicking around?
Also, anyone know if that Italian horse Godolphin bought is any good?
