Big Buck’s…did they forget to add a word?

June 10, 2022 at 11:03 #1601471I am pleased to discover that a colt named Handicapper won the 2,000 Guineas in 1901. It now becomes imperative to find out if a horse called Classic Winner ever won a handicap.
There have been at least six horses so named but it’s unclear whether any of them did.
June 10, 2022 at 11:31 #1601477Match Winner won the Free Handicap at Newmarket in 1982 and that race wasn’t a match (cracking finish- triple photo, in fact).
Does that count? 🤔
June 10, 2022 at 14:07 #1601481Going back a bit but Reference Point’s dam Home On The Range was by Habitat out of Great Guns
Then you have the Juddmonte progeny of Clepsydra (meaning an ancient time measuring device) that included:
Passage of Time who herself produced Time Test,
Father Time
Timepiece
Continuum
Sandglass
Timetable by ObservatoryJune 10, 2022 at 14:20 #16014821989 Racing Post Trophy winner Be My Chief (Chief’s Crown/Lady Be Mine), an unbeaten 6 time winner at 2 (including Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, Solario Stakes at Sandown) that looked bound for the very top at 3 but completely failed to train on managing only 1 run at 3 when last of 7 beaten 26L.
June 10, 2022 at 20:55 #1601536Mary Hinge; one of a plethora of spoonerisms that got past Wetherbys in the 90s.
June 10, 2022 at 21:05 #1601543Shytalk and Muff Diver raised an eyebrow at that time, but my personal favourite from said genre was Whogivesadonald.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 10, 2022 at 23:11 #1601552But then there was the horse bought by supporters of Fartown rugby league club which they attempted to call Fartowner only for Weatherbys to block it due to the moniker being too rude!!
June 19, 2022 at 13:06 #1603295Always liked Geespot, Sire Pursuit of Love, Dam My Discovery
June 20, 2022 at 14:46 #1603368I remember during my time working in Coral, a greyhound called Didlo. Unsurprisingly the commentator got it wrong during one race and there was silence for a good few seconds as he no doubt descended into hysterics, off-mic.
June 20, 2022 at 15:58 #1603376My favourite one at the moment is Fircombe Hall. Pretty sure that is meant to sound like something else.

I am sure there was a horse named Dik Dik.
Which, as everyone knows, is a type of antelope.
June 20, 2022 at 20:36 #1603415It’s asking for trouble to name a horse Entire.
Fate decrees the beast is a short price to be gelded at some stage (which is exactly what happened).
June 20, 2022 at 20:41 #1603417I wondered if “Betterthanfrankel” would be allowed?
And I wonder if it might wind up finishing last in a selling handicap hurdle?
