Premeditated comments like that are about as funny as a hole in the head, it reminded me of that jockey accidentally falling off that horse a few years ago, he even had a warm up first.
To be funny they have to be off the cuff or very funny and not done before imo.Two of the better ones recently have both come from John Hunt, describing Natalie Gemelova aboard Kabeer like a brussel sprout on a Christmas Dinner plate and incorporating the fact that the clown Chapman had tipped up a long odds on shot as a "certainty" that got beaten brilliantly into his commentary on the race.February 20, 2008 at 13:31 #145017I was here Kwai mate and I don’t think I’ve translated Hunty’s commentary about Chapman’s tip to the written word unless I’m mistaken, you’ll have to listen to it for yourself
February 21, 2008 at 00:57 #145208I never used to like Tommo’s commentaries, as he tends to bawl out excitedly at fthe finish, and I usually didn’t have the winner, I suppose. I think most of them do it now. A lot punters like to be geed up by the commentary, whereas I would prefer a quiet measured commentary, like one of the older Irish commentators does.
Anyway, the other day I head him give the most amazing commentary, packed with information, and all very fluently delivered. It really was masterly. I can’t even remember whether he ‘lost the heed’ all together – as is his wont, and as I complained – at the finish.
February 21, 2008 at 06:02 #145216Mr. Caine, I don’t think Mr. Thompson does spontaneity.
He probably thinks of himself as an "a-list celebrity", whatever that may mean, already.
I find him just a little sad.
Colin
I find his ‘wit’ desperate. He’s so frantic to come up with a witty comment he just ends up blustering and laughing at nothing at all in a desperate bid to entertain.
