I reckon that’s probably Jonbon’s best performance. Unless something wins the 2 miler at the DRF by 20 lengths, you can’t really see anything to beat him in the QMCC if he turns up fit and well. Yes Energumene is 11 but he’s no slouch and if Edwardstone ran to his mark then Jonbon’s performance works out around 173, which is well up to the level of Altior and the older Sprinter Sacre when they won the Champion Chase.
January 19, 2025 at 15:16 #1718413Only just caught this today. Very impressive from Jonbon but I suspect Energumene needs the Ryanair trip now with his old legs and Edwardstone literally got beat in a handicap on his last run by a horse who will get lapped if he showed up in the Arkle so hes clearly on the way down. Champion Chase down the years for past decade or so has tended to be the blowout race of the festival, so many short priced good things turned over so Jonbon still has to go and do it. Arguably Cheltenham not his favourite track either.
January 19, 2025 at 19:07 #1718445Jonbon is one of the most underrated and unappreciated horses ever; he is, simply, top class. It always seems he has something to prove. Why,is it because of his half sibling or the yard , and the amount of top class two milers from there over the years, he hails from.
Years ago I was always desperatly hoping Wayward Lad would , just once, stay up the Cheltenhan hill and win the Gold Cup. I feel the same about Jonboin and the QMCC.

He’s some horse . Very little BS about him too , he turns up , and gives his running . Love watching him run - AuthorPosts
