If one of the two bigger boys doesn’t turn up it will be a near walk over

January 3, 2023 at 21:48 #1629567Alan King isn’t expecting a hard race
He has already lined up the Game Spirit after this one before Cheltenham
I know we want to see these clashes but if I were King I’d pull Edwardstone in favour of the other race if the Irish horse turned up.
Look what happened to Shishkin. I think you get one hit at Energumene then you need a decent holidayCharles Darwin to conquer the World

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 3, 2023 at 22:47 #1629576Nathan, King told Nick Luck the horse is very difficult to handle at home if he doesn’t get enough racing; I too thought those races a very tall order as prep for the Queen Mother Champion Chase. He must have a pretty high degree of confidence, as he has not entered Edwardstone in the Ryanair, a race he suggested earlier this season that might be attractive, so even Energumene bolting up at the DRF isn’t going to faze him.
January 3, 2023 at 23:59 #1629583King has a very good horse in his hands so should be confident
Energumene isn’t an ordinary horse though.
I’d imagine Deontay Wilder is difficult to handle if he doesn’t get enough boxing but taking on Tyson Fury two too many times set him back. He’s only had one fight in a year and a half since and that was over in round one.
I guess they can have a re-think about the Game Spirit after the Clarence House if its a brutal encounter.Charles Darwin to conquer the World
January 5, 2023 at 06:21 #1629674After Kempton, King said that Edwardstone would bypass Ascot and go straight to the Game Spirit. Not sure that that plan has changed.
Mullins mentioned the DRF for Energumene; looks like the Clarence House is going to cut up completely.
“ maybe get the credit he deserves for once”
FF- Energumene is currently Timeform’s top rated chaser at any distance and widely regarded in the media as one of the best around. Not sure how much more credit he can get.

January 8, 2023 at 12:54 #1630157If they have a war in this I might be tempted to look at something else bigger for the Champion
January 15, 2023 at 22:11 #1631113He’s certainly unbackable, but I’m definitely going this day now, and really looking forward to seeing Energumene in the flesh again
Edwardstone is a smashing horse, but Energumene should surely be too strong
January 16, 2023 at 15:40 #1631153Just the 3 runners for this.
British racing is truly on its arse!
January 16, 2023 at 15:45 #1631154Or trainers understand the Handicap system better than ever?
Unless you have a serious chance of winning, what is the point of potentially ruining your horse’s mark by running in these races?
Bit surprised a few really moderate horses haven’t been entered in the speculative hope of easy place money, but that would hardly add to the spectacle.

If horses entered in the race are rated 150-160ish and they finish within 10 or 15 lengths of the first and second rated 160/170 rated pair then the handicapper surely leaves them alone.
You could probably even form a reasonable enough argument that some horses could have their rating dropped after running in this. Making it all the more beneficial.
But my main point was more to do with the fact only one other trainer wants to run their horse against the 2 short priced runners as they don’t feel it’s worthwhile to run for such poor prize money. Double or treble the money for the winnings and places and see the interest/runners increase.

They spent the budget on Jermaine Jenas..

January 17, 2023 at 17:02 #1631304Concern I’d have is (if its on) that Edwardstone takes a tumble again early doors and Energuermene has a walkover. Not a massive concern, I’ve got no interest in the race for a bet anyway but it’ll be a bit farcical if you’ve got that happening on ITV in one of your flagship races in the NH season.
January 17, 2023 at 22:03 #1631357I know this is a daft question but I just wondered if people are scared to run horses in these races for place money because if one of the favourites falls like Edwardstone did last time and they, say, come second albeit a long way back it might ruin their handicap rating forever. I’ve been watching old Desert Orchid races recently where top class horses and handicappers all competed against each other. Is it all because Cheltenham dominates everything?
