Hello to you all. The Chester Cup used to be a great betting race years ago, and i have always loved it. I am taken with Fox Hunt this year and hope he gets a good draw. Have you any thoughts. John

    Hi John,

I have backed Agglestone Rock at 40-1 after his win at Newcastle, thought it was quite impressive both on the clock and visually.

I’ll probably have one more bet in the race on the day so I’ll post in here!

Hi Mr Wilson. I take your point. Mark johnson says Fox Hunt is a monkey and he has thoughts on selling him but he has kept him in training and is lightly raced. Also he has run well at Chester before. John.

Just to let you know Mr Wilson, Aggie runs tomorrow in the 5:10 at Haydock.

I adore this horse. As a 4YO he had already won on the AW, over hurdles and fences. He recently completed the ‘Grand Slam’ with his flat turf success at Newcastle.

I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing that he’s running at Haydock tomorrow!?

Anymore information on why you adore the horse, connections said they’re bringing the horse on slowly so maybe more to come.

Heres what I had on him

    AGGLESTONE ROCK: /

“By no means will he be unable to cope at a higher level, this performance is out of the blue given current Racing profile although the trainer has admitted he has taken it slow with the horse. The horse is entered in the Chester Cup, 40-1 looks big at this stage although he made need a longer straight – be prepared to ditch the horse if he fails to back this run up at a higher level” 08.04.11

^^I was a member of the syndicate that hold a share in his stablemate, Goldan Jess (will resume my association with the horse during the year…hopefully), so I like to follow Phil’s horses.

Aggie is a lovely, old fashioned chasing-type – I’m sure Paul Hanagan was sore after riding him at Newcastle!

To have registered wins on the flat, over hurdles and fences as a 4YO is a fine achievement – Aggie is an April foal who completed his ‘hat-trick’ over fences in July 2009, adding to his victories on the flat and over hurdles.

I would love to see him in the Topham Chase one day – check out his Wetherby success last year and you will see what I mean.

How many would need to drop out for him to get a run at Chester?

An unusually large number would need to drop out for Agglestone Rock to get into the Chester Cup, which is limited to 17 runners.

No horse with his rating of 78 has been able to get near the race in recent seasons – his only hope is that the drought continues and the higher rated horses stay at home waiting for rain.

We’ll know more after the weights are published on April 29th, but I estimate he’s currently around number 45 of the 60 entries.

Sometimes he can be too enthustiastic for his own good! A lovely performance.

Will almost certainly go up a lot for that, but still well treated on chase form. Clearly not a horse short of options, though.

Activate is a colt going places. His progression has coicided with a gradual step up in trip and he looks the type to continue improving.

Mystery Star was a decent handicapper back in 2009, giving weight and chasing home Akmal, who has since progressed to group level. Back to winning ways on the AW during the winter, loves fast ground and has course form.

The draw will be an important factor.

Agglestone Rock isn’t among the 49 left in at the six day stage, and with thirty four horses still in rated 90+, the bottom weight this year could be higher rated than ever.

Activate is currently number 32 in the weights.

Admiral Barry looks the one to me. I fancied him to run a big race in the Cesarewitch but it never happened for him unfortunately. He can take a hand next week, and I heard somewhere that Johnny Murtagh’s riding :?:

Was available at 16/1 earlier in the week, but still value to be had at 12/1.

If he can reproduce his hurdling form, Overturn is about one and a half stone well in; if I remember correctly 22 lbs.

    Halla San

could go well with a claimer on. He flew out of the stalls last year so if hes drawn wide this year (provided he goes) he should be able to get a decent position. Hard to recommend a 9yo but 3rd last year off the same mark…one to consider.

    Tastahil

getting into the first 8 places from stall 16 was impressive and looks another that the draw may not matter for. If you can get a price about either of these and they get plum draws your sitting pretty but still not without hope if they get poor draws.

Just an antepost point of view…not sure I’d go for it myself though.
