for a moment, thought the thread title was referring to the following in Simon Holt’s column in the Weekender:

” on average, there are two to five human deaths during the festival and medical staff check they have enough body bags before the meeting. ”

Yes going racing could be bad for your health … too much excitement maybe?

“The Birthday Problem” is a familiar and typically counter-intuitive example of matters probabilistic which, amongst other things, states that the true odds of 2 people in a ‘crowd’ of 23 sharing the same birthday is Evens

I’m sure someone has made a similar study of the true odds of an individual dying in a crowd of x people; which of course isn’t as simple as birthdays with just its one variable but I’d hazard an educated guess that the true odds of 1 person dying in a cumulative crowd of say 130,000 over the four days of Cheltenham is very very long odds-on and 5 ‘expected’

Slight positive skew from the Mean at race meetings I expect due to the high blood pressure caused by seeing your banker for the week being short-headed allied to exceptional amounts of alcohol and nicotine taken beforehand to steady the nerves

God Bless the good folks at St John’s Ambulance: they knew

In 1983 I went to my only Cheltenham Festival (Gold Cup day, Bregawn et al) and the first sight I was greeted with was a chap keeling over right in front of me and despite vigorous attempts from St John’s, passing away.

I should have taken the hint.
