Nico wins a Grade 1 and looks like his dog has just died. What could be wrong?
December 26, 2018 at 17:52 #1390323Im sure he has a part to play with BVD, no one wants a long time unbeaten horse to be beaten, hes a top class fella
December 26, 2018 at 18:00 #1390326Showing his class not rubbing it into the others in the yard.
December 26, 2018 at 18:16 #1390329Remember Denis Law when he sent Utd down?
Can’t help when that clown Persad is hovering with his microphone.
December 26, 2018 at 18:37 #1390331Doesn’t matter to connections if buveur dair was beaten, but it matters an awful lot for a mare to win such a grade 1 in terms of value as a broodmare

Certainly do, laughed my socks off!
What has happened to the “quoute” button on here?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysDecember 26, 2018 at 23:39 #1390347Just got a chance to watch the race again. It was a shocking ride from Nico. A disgrace to the sport and there should be far more made of it. After jumping the second last the only thing he was interested in was setting it up for buveur dair.
He only used the whip properly once, and gave her a second “tap” which I’d say could have been done more forcefully by a 3 year old.
And then with only half a furlnog to go and over a length down in a grade one race, he doesn’t use the whip once and only politely pushes the mare. The fact that he won the race has clouded his disinterest in winning the race and in my opinion the stewards should have held an enquiry. If he had lost the race by a nose instead, there would have been absolute uproar.
The content and intent of the ride was the same, regardless of whether he won by a nose or lost by a nose. A proper disgrace, and he’s very lucky the nose landed the right side for him and it has saved him of what should have been a serious punishment by the stewards.
December 27, 2018 at 00:26 #1390353Here’s a quote in the RP from one of Verdana Blue’s owners Charlie Parker
“It looked like this race would cut up, so Nicky said we should put her in it. I know the trainer and jockey aren’t very happy as they think they’ve lost their jobs – but we’re very happy.”December 27, 2018 at 11:09 #1390363Watching the race live, to me it seemed he was doing the bare minimum to look like he was actually trying to win when he clearly didn’t want to and when he put the whip down half way up the run in, a perverse part of me was thinking I hope he gets beat and then see if anything is said. In the event the mare got there in time to save any kind he awkward conversations he would have had to have with the owners and not a word was said by anyone about what he nearly got away with.
In fact all ITV (Fitzy & McCoy) could fixate on was how bad of a mistake BVD had made (newsflash it really wasn’t), how lucky he was to actually stand up (really….not sure what race they were watching but at no point did he ever look like falling) and that it majorly affected the race outcome (er no it didn’t as if you take Verdana Blue out of the race they would have been waxing lyrical over him easily beating the useful If The Cap Fits by 7L). Absolutely no bias there from those two!!!
With regards to BVD, I note that yesterdays going (good to soft) was the quickest he had run on since winning over 2m4f at Aintree on good ground in 2017, inbetween his subsequent 5 runs have all been on either soft or heavy ground – could it just be that he got caught out by a speedier rival who excels on better ground?
December 28, 2018 at 00:30 #1390479I understand the mantra that everyone wants a champ to win etc.
However some of the comments in interview later , certainly raise some questions.
Back in the day , the likes of the Peter Easterby yard had top class horses such as Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon over hurdles , and Night Nurse and Little Owl over fences who actively competed against each other. The Dickinson yard had the likes of Silver Buck , Bregawn , Wayward Lad, over fences at the top level. Have times changed , or is something a little different nowadays ? !!December 28, 2018 at 22:15 #1390594Pathetic response from a jockey who wasn’t sure if he should have won or not.
December 28, 2018 at 22:21 #1390596He should of been delighted for himself, horse and owner
Not his fault McManus keeps faith with Barry or that Buver D’air ran so fast against Samcro he burnt himself out…
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
December 29, 2018 at 11:11 #1390679Perhaps McManus is not the great sporting owner after all, only when he is winning.
I would agree with you Nathan, I don’t think Barry Geraghty is as good as he was.I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysDecember 29, 2018 at 15:40 #1390731Purwell how on Earth would you come to that conclusion about McManus
December 29, 2018 at 18:30 #1390752Agree with King Sprinter Sacre above. Won the race cleverly, and did not gloat. Well done Nico de Boinville: always a class act.
December 29, 2018 at 23:40 #1390773Purwell have I missed something regarding McManus?
December 31, 2018 at 19:36 #1390931I would have to be with Wexfordman and Chestnut here. Purwell, do you have a shred of information to back that up?
