The Racing Post carries a Pricewise column on the Champion Hurdle today, as advertised for the past week. On page 12 of the same paper ‘The Markets’ section highlights yesterday’s ante-post ‘mover’s, including eight horses shortened in the Champion Hurdle betting. Pathetic.
January 16, 2007 at 16:26 #35933Who has he put up Nore? I haven’t seen it but would be willing to bet it’s Macs Joy.. He’s the only value left in the race for me….
January 17, 2007 at 11:39 #35934Havent read his article but why Asian Maze????
2m on likely good going is surely inadequate?
Last run was a shocker too…
January 17, 2007 at 16:14 #35935Clivex TS said you need a horse with stamina to win the Champion Hurdle as it is not a race where the quickest wins. He thinks Asian Maze will beat Brave Inca.
Feathard Lady for me, IF she gets there and has had a prep run.
January 17, 2007 at 16:38 #35936i think detroit city is going to take all the beating. brave inca will be the closest imo. asian maze will be left behind coming down the hill, as will feathard lady. macs joy has had his chances and not come up with the goods and hardy eustace isnt getting any younger. nothing else is simply good enough. all the value has gone in the champion market imo
January 17, 2007 at 18:16 #35937I still like the chances of Macs Joy, year younger than Brave Inca, proved at Punchestown and other times that he’s at least as good a horse. If he comes out and wins the AIG he’ll be second favourite.
My only concern would be the undulating track at Cheltenham.

January 17, 2007 at 19:37 #35938macs joy beat brave inca at punchestown because it was one race too many for brave inca and he ran very flat. macs joy seems best suited by flat tracks. i think he has place claims at best
January 17, 2007 at 23:58 #35939Dave,
Both horses ran six times last season and met on 5 occasions. Brave Inca had the beating of him last year, but the season before Macs Joy came out on top.
So, like I said they’re pretty closely matched but Macs Joy has age on his side. For me, he represents value against Brave Inca and Detroit City.

More chance of Asian Maze being left behind frankly. Esp on good going
You dont need that much stamina to win this race. I am sure a perusal of past winners would prove that
Also, I simply do not think Asian Maze is good enough
I think the way is open for an excpetionally talented horse to win this year and many could be wondering after the race, why the hell they didnt back Detroit City
I also think Fetheard could be very interesting, if she makes it and Hardy will run better than last year

I dont see why anyone could have Detroit City at the current odds although of course he has a very good chance. Very impressive last year and is up and coming but should be 6/1 at the very least. He is just no value at the moment for what he has achieved this year.
Asian maze seems to be running very well on good ground and she was travelling well last year, the idea of her as a slow coach is not true. I would expect her to run very well but may find one or two too good. At 16 to 1, i think she will finish in front of jazz messenger and fethard lady who are smaller prices.
I still think Brave Inca has too much for all these and he should be favourite at least. At 3 to 1, he will still be called value by some people and has less to prove then many here.
Hardy Eustace and Macs Joy. There is genuine reasoning for why both of these could actually run better this year but i dont think they will.
Harchibald. at his best certain to be placed and yet has no chance of winning.

Strawbear, im sure he wasnt right last day and with some cut in the ground, you never know but his jockey makes no secret about what he would like to be on for the race.
Desert Quest, ..on good ground, this guy could still be the best hurdler in Britain but i think 20s is about right.
Iktitaf…Unless he improves enormously for good ground, it might be that his bubble is burst and word is that his jockey doesnt have him in the same league as Harchibald. Would need to drift before i would back him.
January 18, 2007 at 12:45 #35942I would also prefer to be on those that have proved their well being already this year…. quite afew of these are going to have no more than one run (if any) before big race. Simply not ideal, especially given that none of them is obviously a class above the rest
SHL. You would have to admit that Asian Mazes last run was disturbingly poor
January 18, 2007 at 12:56 #35943I thought a few of Segals arguments were valid, but a few were flawed. It does help if your horse stays 2m4 well, as has been proved in the past. Also, Asians demo job at Aintree was an outstanding piece of form last season. However, he more or less said that soft ground would be assured on the openiing day of the festival. Now, I realise that most tracks on both side of the water have had an exceptional amount of rain in the last 2 months, but a lot of drying can happen within 6 weeks. Also, I never like to see a mare put in such a bad display as her last one. They made an excuse of the ground, but of all the runners in that race, she was touted to appreciate the ground the most! Of the mares, I think Feathard is much the classier animal.
Thats not to say either will win. I was very taken by Brave Incas last run and will be supporting him again.

Fair comment but any horse can have an off day and perhaps this is an urban myth but mares are particularly susceptible
SHL
January 18, 2007 at 17:12 #35945i dont think it is a myth that mares are more likely to have off days. mares often run badly when they are in season which may have been the reason for asian mazes more run. also mares are moody creatures and she might not have been in the right mood!
January 18, 2007 at 17:38 #35946Hello,
I think I will go against the "obvious" Irish who I think, with the majority of them, have had their chance and victories.
I am still siding with my pre-season choice, NOBLE REQUEST, I cannot see it out of the first 3, and the run in the Tote Trophy will be a big indicator as he will be carrying top weight.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with ACAMBO’s last victory and I was very impressed with it’s performance at Haydock last year [Swinton]. This animal could be actually improving, again The Tote will give us more information.
A bold display from the above two could make their current Betfarce trading mark of around 40s very generous indeed. ;)
regards,
doyley

i admire your sense of adventure but what has he done this year…or last year for that matter to suggest he is good enough.

Hardy Eustace has an entry in the World Hurdle this year, which is probably indicative of his trainer’s view of the horse’s chance in the Champion.
