In the 2 weeks leading up to the festival some bookmakers will be laying odds about next years Champion Chase. Douvan & Altior will likely be both be odds against, who will be/should be favourite and who will you be backing?
February 13, 2017 at 23:00 #1287315I wouldn’t be betting at such short prices way in advance. Very disappointing it isn’t happening this year as it has become so boring watching Douvan beating up the same bunch of horses over and over again. Yes, we know he has beaten Sizing John a million times but I think we now know that horse was running over the wrong trip. If the match-up does happen and I suspect Mullins will do everything he can to avoid it, Douvan has nothing in his locker to trouble Altior. Even under no pressure his low, flat style of jumping can look precarious at times and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up on the floor. Such a race might well break him.
February 13, 2017 at 23:07 #1287318I’ve not seen anything that Douvan has delivered that’s anything like as impressive as what Altoir showed the other day
February 13, 2017 at 23:11 #1287319Ben_Bernanke put me on to Altior for next years Champion Chase was 6/1 not now, I only had £2.00 on it…..

February 14, 2017 at 00:18 #1287321I think its harsh to say douvan hasnt shown as much as altior, all you can do is win and win he has,
Also dont think you can say sizing john Was running over the wrong trip, he would be a MULTIPLE grade 1/2 winner at 2m if it wasnt for douvan, he wouldnt even have ran the other day…. i think its more credit to douvan that hes stepped up in trip and won rather than detrimental to douvan saying SJ was running at wrong trip
altior looks some prospect though
Dont think theyll step douvan up in trip

Of course you can unless you think beating a 140’s horse like The Game Changer is proper Grade 1 form. Sizing John has just ran to a rating in the mid 160’s. The figures show that he has improved around a stone.
February 14, 2017 at 09:36 #1287336If any bookie was generous enough to offer it as NRNB I would gladly put something on Altior every week to pay for our family holiday in 2018!
February 14, 2017 at 10:19 #1287344Isn’t it a bit of a sad indictment of the jumps game that people are discussing a hypothetical match up at next year’s Cheltenham?
Why aren’t there races before then prestigious enough to attract both horses?

I would agree with that. There are just too many options to avoid clashes prior to the Festivals. Mullins, in particular, will nearly always steer the easiest possible path. The other problem is too many good horses in too few stables and we know that isn’t going to change in a hurry.
February 14, 2017 at 15:49 #1287389Id be all over the 14/1 for Death Duty 2018 RSA there, 14/1 is HUGE.

February 14, 2017 at 20:17 #1287415You have to laugh don’t you haha can’t really back it now at 5/2, probably be 2/1 after he wins the Arkle maybe shorter in which case will have to wait until next season
March 13, 2017 at 20:05 #1291683I’ve had a few quid on the 5/2
If they step up Douvan next year Altoir be shorter than Warwick Davis in next years betting.
I’m also coming around to the thinking another year could see yet more improvement from Altior, he certainly looks the part.Blackbeard to conquer the World
March 14, 2017 at 19:08 #1292031Altior won but wasn’t overly impressive, think they went the right route today.

March 14, 2017 at 19:35 #1292039Henderson once said there is still long way for Altior to be like Sprinter Sacre (the same man said that B Power probably beats B D’air on a better ground than soft haha). Sprinter at his best was a proper machine, we might not see horse like him for a long time…Douvan would beat Altior today, but we don’t know if something didn’t go wrong for Altior today.
