Summed up pretty well there insomniac. To be honest, I want Rangers and Celtic to head to England, they have outgrown the SPL. However, looking from a competition perspective, thay would have to start at best in League 2 in England. And probably even the Conference! I think its all a non-starter.
Having said that, how far away are we from a European League? The top 5 from Spain, England, Italy, Germany, France, Holland, top 2 or 3 from Portugal, Scotland, Denmark, Norway, Austria etc etc all getting together and forming a season long Euro league. Money talks on many of these issues. Do you guys see it happening anytime?
The rest of the SPL would flourish once all the other teams realised they had a chance of the title. Hey, they might even take a risk and invest in order to do so and as such attract better players than they do now with not only the extra money, but a shot at trophies (which you cant use as a selling point with the old firm still in the league).
June 2, 2009 at 02:22 #231489So how will this work then, to get them in the following options must be put in place
1 Have a 22 team Premiership which gives each English team 4 extra matches
2 Have 5 relegated clubs in the preceeding season so the 3 Championship promoted clubs can come up and 2 more go down from the Prem for C and R to keep it at a 20 club league
3 Have 2 clubs relegated from the Prem so C and R join but no promotions from the Championship to allow this to stay at a 20 club Prem
And if C and R are so dominant then why dont Cardiff and Swansea join the Welsh Premier League and keep winning that so they can ask to join the Premiership as the Welsh league is being dominated by those two
The SPL is a decent league but if C and R left then either Aberdeen or the two Edinburgh teams dominate then will they ask to join our league aswell.
June 2, 2009 at 04:51 #231502Looking at their current squads both Celtic and Rangers would get absolutely mullered by the top teams in the English Premiership. However, given the increased television revenue they would receive and the inevitable rise in their attractiveness to potential transfer targets, I would predict that both Celtic and Rangers could easily reach the level where the likes of Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are at now within 3 to 4 seasons.
It’ll never happen though.
June 2, 2009 at 19:56 #231567No, the real reason they would not be welcomed into the Premiership is that turkeys do not vote for Christmas. The thought of those two arriving on their doorsteps would give most of them the heebeegeebees. Aint that the truth.
I would say this is sort of true. As, any changes to the structure of the Premier League only needs to be agreed by 14 of the 20 club chairmen – and we all know the allure of the extra dollar when it comes to that lot. So, in theory numbers could work.
Interestingly, the FA have very little control over the running of the PL however, the area it does have a veto in is in Promotion & Relegation so for Celtic and Rangers to join the PL and for it to remain at 20 clubs it would require the FA’s approval or the league would have to expand to 22 clubs.
June 3, 2009 at 00:04 #231630You make some very good points Himself.
Equi’ I think you are placing Celtic & Rangers in a more competitive environment but not anticipating the attendant resources that environmnet would bring. They would most probably become a real force eventually but only after time, as the loss of European football initially would be a big barrier to overcome.
There is plenty of historical evidence from times when the financial playing field was more level that Scottish clubs would be very competitive.
Personally I agree that direct placement into the EPL is unrealistic and probably not desireable. If a start in
June 3, 2009 at 00:51 #231649Its a non starter….
UEFA will kill at birth because then the precedent for Ajax leaving netherlands say or benfica leaving portugal would be set. And that would be chaos
Also, the EPL doesnt need them and thats that frankly
Dont need the hassle either. Been trouble with Rangers fans recently of course and its arguable that Celtic are the worlds most anglophobic club anyway.
As for how they would perform, not good initially but with gathering resources, they would compete. But wont happen….so pure conjecture

In fairness clivexx, I think the trouble with Rangers fans in Manchester was in no small part due to there English based fans. And I use the terms "fans" very loosely. Fans of one club are no better or worse than fans of other clubs on the whole. Every club has its ned supporters and every club has its true faithful.
I dont think its Anglophobia that exists. Its the scottish mentality of the underdog. About wanting to get one over on the clubs of the bigger neighbour (ie Celtic being written off against Liverpool in uefa cup a few years ago and wanting to prove the media wrong).
June 4, 2009 at 16:29 #231947I think blaming "english" Rangers fans for the trouble in Manchester has a stench of Liverpools despicable and pathetic blaming of Chelsea fans (never retracted by that vile club) for Heysel
I have known some celtic fans and they are fine, but have also encountered some who drive home the anti Brit (english) thing quite hard. Cant really be denied that there is an element of that
June 4, 2009 at 16:47 #231952Ok Clivexx I see your point, and I didn’t mean to suggest it was only rangers’ english based fans that caused in problems. In reality the trouble was probably caused by holligans not fans of any team.
I wouldn’t worry about some celtic fans being anti Brit (English)…many of them are Anti Brit (Scottish)!!!! Remember Britain is made up of more than just England.
