THE VILLAGE goes in the opening novices’ hurdle on Carlisle Sunday card.

Lucinda Russell’s other runner Voyage A New York looks the most likely winner. Donald McCain has a hurdles newcomer in Uppertown Cave that should get involved and Venetia Williams introduces former French chaser Russborough. On that basis it’s unlikely The Village will be in the mix, but he has Ballyvoque and Quick Brew to aim at. I will be worried if Knockairn finishes in front of us!

Dry weather and a decent breeze should result in Good to Soft ground at worst so I can’t see the ground being an excuse.

The Village weakened rapidly four out and was reported by Peter Buchanan as having a breathing problem. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise given that he has faded in all of his races for us to date. I understand he will now have an operation to rectify the problem and hopefully will become more competitive once his wind is clear.
