    Not unpopular here

Tom Moore seems a thoroughly decent and humble chap who had a nice idea and carried it out. The public took him to their hearts (who couldn’t?) and generously donated millions

Unfortunately the media and particularly politicians have appropriated him for their own ends

I think this could be to do with age. Obviously Tom could have carried on raising money for various causes over the next 30 years but I think age maybe against him. Although I do agree Boris has done this to be popular with the people/media etc. and even deflect the attention away from the complete mess the government have made, Tom can hardly do 20-30 years more fundraising to gain an honour such as this.

This an interesting article of how the”spin” started:

    https://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/news/people/captain-tom-moores-ps32-million-fundraiser-originally-introduced-world-former-northampton-student-2858119

I also agree that a “knighthood” was not warranted.

    Interesting but unsurprising article Matron.

I’m not at all surprised the daughter had something to do with it.

Yeah, the Twitter Sleuths were all over it early doors, certainly puts a different slant on it, for all you can’t take a thing away from him.

Not surprisingly, considering the cesspit that is Twitter, some of the reports were pretty savage.

Latest rumour doing the rounds is that he’s going to be the star of The John Lewis Christmas Ads.

Good luck to him but this whole media circus around him has gone way too far. He’s 100 FFS, leave the man alone. He’s raised a few quid now let him have a well deserved rest.

Now been admitted to hospital with breathing problems.

I fear that this can only end up with him being marked down as another Covid death statistic.

Thank you Ginger for your good wishes on the other thread. Young people seem to survive covid because their immune systems are relatively immature and do not overact by producing too many cytokines. As people get older the immune system is more developed and can overact to a foreign threatening host and produce too many attacking cytokines – a ‘cytokine storm’ with resulting inflammation. This surplus will start attacking the internal organs – heart kidneys lungs etc.with sometimes fatal results.

People who have reached 100 usually have very stable health and their immune systems are usually much quieter and the threat of immunosenescence ( gradual weaknening of the immune system resulting in a higher possibility for cytokine storms ) much reduced. Data in one part of India where 90 centenarians contracted covid showed a low death rate of 5%. Their worst death rate was in the age group 60-69.
I wish Captain Tom a speedy recovery. My concerns for him would be more centred around his recent pneumonia having weakened his strength and his lungs.

Glad to hear Tom has a better chance than I thought gamble. Thanks for that info. :good:
I Also saw on either Euronews or France 24 that his daughter says he is not in intensive care which is obviously another positive.
